1. أَصاب القَذى عينَ الرّقيب الموكّلِ

    وفُضَّ فمُ الواشي بنا المتقوّلِ

    The guard's eye was stricken as the slanderer's mouth gaped

    And the wings of the tale-bearing bird were clipped

  2. ودُقَّ جناحا طائر البين وانتشى

    بنَحر مطايا الظَّاعن المترحّلِ

    His firm resolve was weakened and the mouths of the enviers twisted

    Perhaps love would clear for us some favor from him

  3. وزُمَّت إلى ضعف القوى عزمهُ النَّوى

    ورضَّض أَفواه الحُداة بجَندلِ

    And heal the sickness of the bewildered, suffering lover

    May every slanderer be healed by his tears

  4. لعل الهوى يصفو لنا منه نعمة

    فيشفى غليلَ الهائم المتعللِ

    And may every dwelling host his longing

    When the estranged one mentions him, he sheds a tear

  5. وقد يُشتَفَى باكِ على كل ظاعنٍ

    ومُرتهنٌ بالشوق في كل منزلِ

    And when the intimate one sees his face, he smiles

    My yearning stirred you and your passion overwhelmed you

  6. إذا ذكر الجافي شَجاه بعبرة

    وإن أبصر العافي وجاه بأَفكلِ

    So you returned, wounded by separation, to the one you intended

    And you spent the night shedding copious tears

  7. أَجِدَّكَ راعتك الحمول وهيَّجت

    هواك برحل الحيرة المتحمّلِ

    Loving one from long ago and recently

    With desire from the end and the beginning for me

  8. فعُدتَ لمجروح من البين مُقصَدٍ

    وجدتً بمسفوح من الدَمع أشكل

    With a beloved whose sweet talk

    Struck me, so she hit the mark with amorous glances

  9. وبتَّ بحبٍّ من قديم وحادثٍ

    لديّ وشوقٍ من أخير وأوَّلِ

    Smoothly flowing, softly rustling

    Her dress swaying like a bending bough

  10. بمحبوبة عندي شهيٍّ حديثُها

    رمتني فصادتني بألحاظ مُغْزلِ

    Revealing a gazelle-like figure

    With complexion like red sandalwood

  11. أسيلة مجرى العُلطتين مهفهف

    مجال وشاحيْها رداحُ المخلخلِ

    Smiling with mouth like a ruby

    Dazzling with the radiance of her cheek

  12. تهزّ كَغصن البان قداً مقوّماً

    على مثل دعص الّرملة المتهيّلِ

    As if stars were borrowed for her braids

    Clashing from a cloud of pearls

  13. وتسفر عن مثل الغزالة شيئة

    على متنها لون الأثيث المرجَّلِ

    As if amber and musk were scattered on her

    I would have shot arrows of love from my languorous eyelids

  14. وتبسّم عن كالأقحوان مؤشّرٍ

    به اشنبٌ عذب الّلمى والمقبّلِ

    She revived in me longing and passion after

    I had found peace and almost overcome love

  15. تريك إذا افترت بحسن عوارضٍ

    وميضَ السّنا في العارض المتهلهِل

    Yet I credited her with the favour of love

    And I said, when will you cease to love?

  16. كأنّ ثناياها أعيرت سُلافةً

    تصفّق من درّ الغَمام بسَلسلِ

    I secretly delight in the sincerity of her love

    And openly show the aloofness of the coquette

  17. كأنّ عليها العنبّر الوردَ شابه

    مع المسك مبثوثاً سحيقُ القرنفلِ

    In my heart is a passion, if she saw some of its secret

    She would regret the coyness I display

  18. لأَهدت إلى قلبي سهاماً من الهوى

    بأجفان عينيْ فاتر الطّرف أَكحلِ

    And the proud one is deprived of the pleasure of his love

    Love is refined for the humble lover

  19. أعادت لي الأطراب والشوق بعدما

    سلوتُ وكادت غمرة الحبّ تنجّلي

    And I have promised her faithfulness in every situation

    Unlike the treacherous hypocrite

  20. على أنّني قلّدتها منّةَ الهوى

    وقلتُ متى تذهلْ عن الحبّ أذهلِ

    Keeping the pledge of the covenant-breaking

    And preserving what was entrusted to me from a neglected secret

  21. أُسِرُّ لها وجدَ المعّنى بحبّها

    وأبدي صدود المعرضِ المُتَجمّلِ

    My nature has returned to virtue and likewise I have become accustomed

    To the habits of the noble, not the complacent blamer

  22. وعندي هوىً لو عاينتْ بعض سرّه

    لأزرت بما أُبدي لها من تجَمُّلِ

    The lineage of high-minded Omar, they are indeed

    The people of nobility and merit in every gathering

  23. وقد يُحرم المعتَزُّ لذّةَ حبِّهِ

    يصفي الهوى للعاشقِ المتذلِّلِ

    May God establish the means of nobility through Muhammad

    And the two luminaries, Nubuhan and the praised Ahmad

  24. وقدعَهدت منّي على كل حالة

    سجيّةَ غير الغادرِ المُتبدلِ

    And clothe them with glorious, embroidered grace

    Above the elevated plateau of splendid glory

  25. وفاءً بما حملت من عهد ناكثٍ

    وحفظاً لما استُودعتُ من سرّ مهملِ

    Whether pleased or angry, none but the forbearing

    Are seen among them wherever they are

  26. عدتني سجايا الخير واعتدتُ مثلها

    عوائد غير السّائم المتجملِ

    From them comes the hoped-for fresh rain

    It suffices them the fancy of the imagined cloud

  27. وصفيتّ أخلاقي بصحبةِ سادةٍ

    من الأزد طالوا بالنّهى والتطوّلِ

    And the dripping of the fresh rain from their fingers

    Suffices the hopeful and gratifies the wisher

  28. بني عمرَ الشّمّ المصاليت إنهم

    لأهل العلى والفضل في كل محفلِ

    The offender may seek refuge in their sanctuary

    And take shelter in the precincts of an unassailable refuge

  29. قضى الله أسبابَ العلى بمحمّد

    ونبهان والمحمُود أحمد من علِ

    In the Azd mountain, its fighters guarding it

    With regiments of horsemen inclination towards their cubs

  30. وألبسهم فضلاً موشّى مطرّزاً

    على صهوتيْ مجد أغرّ محَجّلِ

    And every strong-willed warrior among you

    Steadfast, resolute, no coward

  31. ولم يُرَ فيهم حيث كانوا على الرّضى

    أو السّخط إلاّ عادة المتطوّلِ

    Who is accustomed to the zeal of battle

    While the horses stampede, he is no waverer

  32. يشيم المرجّى منهمُ شيَم النّدى

    فيكفيه شيْمَ البارقِ المتَخيّلِ

    Dragging the stallion by the lead

    Prancing lightly in the ostentatious trappings

  33. ويغني بمرفضّ النّدى من أناملٍ

    لديهاغَنى الرّاجي ونُجحَ المُؤمّلِ

    As sheltering guardians for the warriors you seem

    Like snarling lions inclining toward their cubs

  34. وقد يلجأ الجاني إلى عرَصاتهم

    فيأوي إلى أركان أمنعِ مَعقلِ

    O people of King Omar son of Nubuhan you

    Have outstripped others with glory that speaks for itself

  35. إلى جبل الأزد المحامين دونه

    بجُرد المذاكي والوشيج الموكّلِ

    If your virtue cannot be counted

    Then what is the point of prolonged praise?

  36. وكل عتيكيّ العزيمة فاتك

    شديد ثبات الجأش ليس بزمَّلِ

    So no generosity but you have surpassed it by your goodness

    No glory but you have surpassed it by deference

  37. ومن ألف الهيجاءَواعتاد كرّةً

    على صهوات الخيل ليس بأَميلِ

    It is incumbent to praise you

    And proper for the poet's craft to represent you

  38. يجر فضولَ السّمهريّ من القنا

    ويخطر في سرد الدَّلاص المذيّلِ

    You have remained, O people of Nubuhan, and your abode

    Has become accustomed to such honor as solves every complex matter

  39. كماة حماة للذّمار تخالهم

    ضراغمَ من خَفّان تحنو لأشبلِ

  40. بني عمر المَلك ابن نبهان انكم

    سبقتم بمجد يعربيّ مؤثّلِ

  41. إذا كان لا يُسطاع إحصاءُ فضلكم

    ففي أي شيء طولُ مدح المطوّلِ

  42. فلا جود إلا حزتموا بصَنيعِكم

    ولا مجد إلاّ حزتموا بالتّوقّلِ

  43. ففي ناطق فرض الثناء عليكم

    ورتبة قول الشاعر المتمثّلِ

  44. بقيتُمْ بني نبهان واعتادَ دارَكم

    من العزّ ما يكفيكم كلَّ معضّلِ
