1. أَمن بعد جدّ الشيب أَعبث بالهَزلِ

    إذاً أَنا معدومُ البصيرة والعقلَ

    I jest in my grey old age, bereft of insight and reason!

    What beauties glance my way, when my head's but dusty stubble?

  2. ومن لي من البيض الحسَان بنظرةٍ

    إليَّ وفي رأْسي قذَى الأَعين النُّجلِ

    I excuse my frail soul with warnings, tired of the commonplace.

    By my life, how I misled it with youth's foibles long ago!

  3. أُعلّل بالتخويف نفساً عليلةً

    تملّت ورود الغيّ علاً على نهلِ

    I sought perfection in the love my faith demanded;

    but when I gained it, perfection itself eluded me.

  4. لعمري لقد أَجريتُها رسنَ الصِّبا

    علالةَ فتيان الشّيبة من قبلي

    No fair woman delights me now, nor intimacy with a witty friend.

    My fear of gossip drove me to make my way clearly among men.

  5. وقد كنت أَبغي العذل في حبّ مذهبي

    فلَمّا تناهيت انتهيتُ بلا عذلِ

    Not that I burden people with my sins, but fame for virtue I lack.

    Woe to the Banu Nabhan for any disgrace! Never have I found

  6. فأصبحت لا الصّهباء مّما يروقني

    بلهوٍ ولا الغيد الأَوانس بالشّكل

    slip of sandal in their abode. None of their dead we miss,

    save one lord, a babe in nature though mature in years,

  7. عَداني عن ذكر الأَباطيل خيفَتي

    خُطوباً إلى الأَقوام واضحةَ السُّبلِ

    suckled on the noble traits of brave men, so even the new born

    displays the temper of the elders.

  8. وماخُصّ بالأَحداث قوم وإنّما

    لوقع الرزايا شهْرة في ذوي الفضلِ

    Do we not mourn sincerely for the Yarbu' we have lost,

    the pearl taken from Abu Hasan's brood? By my life, fate

  9. لعَاً لَبني نبهَان من كل عَثْرَة

    ولا وجدت في دارِهم زلّة النَّعْلِ

    has matched its disaster with the keening of a noble father

    for his noble son. Weep, my liver, bleed, my eyes,

  10. فلسنا نرى مفقودهم غير سيدٍ

    وإن كان طفلاً بالمخيَلة في الطفلِ

    for the death of Ibn Duhl, with no peer among the Bani Saida!

    Fairer he was to hearts than sleep itself, lovelier to the eye

  11. مشوبٌ بأخلاق الكرام رضاعهم

    فيعرف في مولودهم شيَم الكَهْلِ

    than kohl, till he lives on in spirits as though each soul

    were imprinted on his sword's blade. The shining planet sank

  12. ألسنا نبكّي يعرباً أسفاً على

    خلال حَواها من أبي حسن ذُهلِ

    from the horizon, leaving the world in darkness.

    Crescent moon of cloudy night, his death refused

  13. لعمري لقد ناط الزَّمان مصابَه

    بخَير أبٍ باكٍ على خير مانسلِ

    to wax full or set.

    Ziyad and Khaulah's lineage contained hosts of glorious deeds.

  14. فياكبدي من حرّ وجد تَصدّعي

    وياعينُ سحيّ الدَّمع سَجلاً على سَجلِ

    O father of Arabs, ripped from your warrior youth by blind fortune

    when you had gathered your kin! You have entered a house

  15. تولى ابن ذهل يعربٌ لا تَرى له

    مدى الدَّهر في أهل البسيطة من مثلِ

    from which no longing visitor can reach you.

    Yet he who stands atop your grave, weeping, feels no less anguish

  16. وقد كان أحلى في النفوس من المنى

    واشهى وأبهى في العيون من الكحلِ

    than you in your dark hollow! A father who thought his wealth

    and family as nothing, when it came to ransoming you.

  17. فأصبح كيّاً في الضَمائر ذكْرُهُ

    كأن كل قلبٍ ضُمَّ منه على نَصْلِ

    He saw in you what pleased him most, the finest sight

    for a genealogist's eye.

  18. مضى الكَوكب الدريّ من أُفق العُلى

    سقوطاً رمى الدُّنيا ببائقه الثُّكلِ

    O Nights of bitter life, rare visitors to him, postmen of doom massed behind!

    Your phantom is present, your memory fresh. No footprint fades, no substitute

  19. هلال سماءِ لعتيكِ أبى لهُ

    كسوفُ المنايا أن يتمَّ ويستعلي

    can comfort us. God grant you peace and mercy, and send clouds pouring down

    upon clouds to soak your tomb! We bow to the judgment of the True Arbiter,

  20. عمومةَ نبهان حَوى وخؤولةً

    له في زياد نبعتيْ شرفٍ جزلِ

    for nights have neither sense nor folly in their decree. We draw patience itself

    to endure whatever may come or go.

  21. أبا العرب اغتالتك من بين فتية

    حوادث بينٍ بعد مجتمع الشَّملِ

    The Banu Nabhan, from what has struck them, are like lions whose den time has robbed.

    Had my enemy felt but lightly the claws and teeth

  22. حللتَ بدار لاسبيل لزائر

    إليكَ شديد الشوق ممتَنع الوَصلِ

    that drove into barren ground, Those are a people whose glory God has embroidered

    with righteous word and deed. Madness has not ravaged their dreams

  23. وإن الذي في علو قبرك باكياً

    لا عظم حزناً منك في جانب السُّفلِ

    nor greed their wealth. Boughs of Ghatrif, scions of Amr ibn Amir

    with fragrant bloom and root. They are the Azd's mountain, mankind's refuge

  24. أبٌ كنتَ زينَ المَال والأهل عنده

    فلَمْ يألُ أن يفديكَ بالمال والأَهلِ

    in its season of ripening.

    When they don the worn mantle and stand up girt, unequaled champions,

  25. رآى فيكَ من آرائه مايُسرّهُ

    كأحسن ماقرّت به عيْنُ ذي نَسلِ

    they give drink to the thirsty and feed the famished,

    they ease hardships and level the smooth plain.

  26. ليَاليَ أتعَاس الحَياة نوَادر

    إليْكَ وأحداق المُنى خلْفُة الرّسلِ

    O Banu Nabhan, preserved and then made secure

    from the caprices of fate in meadows thick with bloom!

  27. خيالك موجود وذكْرُكَ شاهِرٌ

    فَلا قِدَمٌ يُنسى ولا عوضٌ يسلى

    This sincere praise is from one whose poetry's gems are proof

    of his nobility in word and judgment.

  28. عليك من الباري سلام ورحمةٌ

    وجادك صوبُ المزنِ هَطلا على هطلِ

    But for my sense of shame, I would rightly claim

    to see no poet who can equal me!

  29. رضىً بقضاءٍ الحَقّ من حكم عادلٍ

    فمَا لليالي حكمُ حلْمٍ ولا جهلِ

    The envious will sing my praises once their hearts

    are purged of hatred for me and my superiority is made plain.

  30. وصَبر لتصريف الحوادث نحْتسي

    مع العمر صرفاً ما يمرّ وما يُحْلي

  31. كأنّ بني نبهان فيمَا أصابهم

    أَسود عرين غَالها الدّهر في شبلِ

  32. ولو أَنه بعض العدى بطشت به

    براثنُ شُثنٌ ركبت في شوىً عبْلِ

  33. أولئك قومٌ طَرّزَ الله مجدَهم

    بما أَثروا من صالح القَول والفِعْلِ

  34. فما عاثَ في أحلامهم سفهُ الخَنا

    ولا ذاد عن أموالهم شَرَه البُخلِ

  35. غطارف من أبناء عمرو بن عامر

    فروع لها طيب الأرومة والأصلِ

  36. هم الجبل الأزديُّ يعتصم الورَى

    به وربيع الناس في الزّمن المحلِ

  37. إذا لبسوا الزُّعف الدّلاص والجموا

    عتاق المذاكي غيْر ميل ولا عُزْلِ

  38. أقاموا صَغا الجُليَّ وصانوا حمى العُلى

    وألقوا يد النّعمى على الحزن والسّهلِ

  39. بقيتم بني نبهان ثم وُقيتمُ

    صروف الرّدى في أنعم ثرّةِ الوبلِ

  40. وهذا الثناء المحضُ من ناظم لكم

    معانيه الغراء في قوله الفصلِ

  41. ولولا الحيا والدّين تهت وحق لي

    على الفضل أني لا أرى شاعراً مثلي

  42. سيثني عليَّ الحاسدون إِذا خلت

    قُلوبهم من بغضتي وبدا فضلي
