1. Only the rain's downpour benefits us

In the lofty shelter of the lord Dhuhl son of Umar,

  2. Where, from the branches of bounty, we gather

Every kind of fruit in generosity's shade.

  3. One who, when prosperous, enriches his people,

And when in hardship, shows no discontent.

  4. And whenever you ask him, he gives readily

Beyond what you ask of him, then apologizes.

  5. And when an offense warrants anger,

Clemency brings him contentment [reading uncertain], and he forgives.

  6. And his is the spacious dwelling sought for bounty,

So it is inhabited throughout and much frequented.

  7. He does good spontaneously and purely,

As clear as dew, with no cloudiness in it.

  8. And his are ʿAtakī virtues,

Like a rose-scented breeze in the cool before dawn.

  9. Dhuhl alone is truly human,

And all other people are but bodies and forms.

  10. The Yemeni Azd have gained honor through him,

And Mudar wished it were of his lineage.

  11. And indeed I praise Dhuhl for what

Is evident among people and proven.

  12. So whenever I adorn him, it is as though I

Said to people: Look at the moon's light.

  13. Mine, O Dhuhl, are the pleasing qualities,

And the favors, the eminence, and the glory.

  14. And indeed to you was brought, O Abu

Hasan, the finest that fate has brought:

  15. Honor inherited from forebears,

And praise stored up through deeds of kindness.

  16. Through your favors I see the best of night travel,

And through your goodness, tales of evening talk.

  17. And when the Azd are reckoned as a body,

You would be its hearing and sight.

  18. You are praised by tongues, and in

Every region there is a trace of your favors.

  19. People do not dispute your excellence; rather,

Every living soul has acknowledged your merit.

  20. Live through all the days, O Dhuhl, and remain

    In eminence, bliss, and delight.

  21. May the servant ever return to you [reading uncertain], O

Best of those who prayed, sacrificed, and slaughtered camels.

  22. And may God let you see your wishes fulfilled

In your sons, the noble lords, proud-nosed and radiant.

  23. And listen to a poem from my verse,

    Like rubies separated by pearls.
