1. تجنبْت والمشْتاقُ لن يتجنّبا

    وفاءً ويأبى القلبُ أَن يتَقلَّبا

    I've avoided while the ardent cannot avoid

    Being faithful, and the heart refuses to waver

  2. ويا للهوى لِلمُستهام فؤآدهُ

    إليك إذا باعدت أَلاَّ تُقرِّبا

    Oh, for the passion of one whose inner self is enthralled by you!

    When you're distant, won't you come closer?

  3. وإني لمغلوبُ العزيمة في الهوى

    وذو الحبّ أَحْرى أن يَرِقّ فيُغلبا

    My resolve is overpowered by passion’s command

    And the lover, foremost, is to softly languish, overruled

  4. وكم ذلّ للمحبوب من متعَزّز

    وهان لاحكام الهوى من تصعّبا

    How many a proud one has been humbled before his beloved!

    And how the edicts of passion make the defiant yield!

  5. واني وأن أَبصرتني بعد حدّةً

    إلى حدة صفرَ الانامل أَشيبا

    Though after severity you see me, I'll show

    Fingertips yellowed by the flames of tribulation

  6. أَأَصبو ويعروني على الشيب صَبْوَة

    وان كان غياً بالكبير إذا صبَا

    Shall they dub the hoary-headed one youthful

    While age in an elder is but meet when he frosts?

  7. واغشى فناءً الحيَّ قد عَنّ سِربهمْ

    عَذارى فأْصطادَ الغَزال المُرَّبيا

    The living throng a meadow where gazelles grazed

    And a herdsman snared the bush-raised young

  8. وينعني منه بأسود فاحم

    واحمَر وردي وابيض أَشيبا

    It wards me off with hot-tempered rough ones

    Ruddy, roseate and white-templed I've grown

  9. وأَغدو مع الفتيان بين دساكرٍ

    لنصْطادَ باللّهو السُّرورَ فنَطربا

    With the youths I sally to hunt for delight

    Till the grove, when daybreak flows through it, trills

  10. إذا الرّوض لا النّور فيه ورَقرَقت

    عليه مع الأْسحار انفاسَها الصَّبا

    The zephyrs knit it assorted aged garb

    And for it molded bracelets on the hill

  11. وحاكت له الانواءَ أنواعَ وشيبها

    وصاغت له ألوان حَلي على الرُّبى

    So there is red interlaced with white gleaming

    Mocking in the branches, gilded yellow

  12. فمن أَحمرٍ قانٍ وأبيض ناصعٍ

    يُضاحك في الأغصان أصفر مُذهبا

    And lemon-yellow, pure brocade untainted

    Save when lips touch it, so it smolders

  13. وصهباء صِرف لامزاج لكأسِها

    سِوى أَن يطلّ الطلّ فيها فيقطبا

    The vine tendrils circle it as though a star

    Spun among cup-companions seated in a ring

  14. يَطوف بِها رَخص البنان كأنَّهُ

    يدير على الجلاّس في الكوب كوكبا

    When a hand seizes it, the tendrils in the cup

    Bear what drips from it, all red-dyed

  15. إذا أخذتها الكفّ خلت بنانها

    بما طش منها في الاناء مخضّبا

    Have you not seen me in a dream-state try

    To wrest some joy whereby my troubled heart is soothed?

  16. ألم ترني في حالة الحلم ابتغي

    من اللّهو مايُسْلي الفؤآد المُعذّبا

    Else, does the eye espy wherein it may delight?

    Can hearing settle the mind into tranquil response?

  17. والاّ فهل مرآى به العيْن تزْدهي

    وهل مسمعٌ تقضي به النفسُ مأربا

    Is there but a lifetime giving you no sweetness

    Devoid of bitterness, no draft wholesome?

  18. وهلْ غيرُ دهرٍ لا يُذيقك مطعماً

    بلا كدرٍ بل لا يسيغك مشربا

    I've followed comrades only for amusement

    And in them I see no genteel and cultured soul

  19. وما أَتبع الأصحاب إلاّ تِعِلّةً

    ولسْتُ أَرى فيهم لبيباً مهذَّبا

    So many a friend's misstep unimagined by me

    Is a shocking breach of manners in my view

  20. فكم زلّةٍ من صاحبِ لا تخاله

    عليَّ بها من شدّة الخرق مذنبا

    I've borne the hurt, overlooking the offense

    And who is there, if you found flaw, would also condemn?

  21. فأحتَمل الأذى وأُغضي على القَذَى

    ومن ذا الذي إنْ أَنتَ اعْتَبْت اعْتبا

    If only there were a brother of sincerity and intuition

    We've tested the world and traveled it through

  22. وهَلاَّ أخو صِدقٍ كذهلٍ ويعربٍ

    فد امتَحَنا الدُّنيا وساسا وجَرَّبا

    My princely lords of Qahtan's line

    And the Amir's sons who inherited their father

  23. أميرَيّ بني قَحْطانَ واْبنيَ أَميرها

    وخيرُ سَليلي ماجدٍ وَرَثا أَبا

    A father who exemplified honor's path

    And his sons emulate his fair practice

  24. أَبٌ سنَّ في سبل المكارم سُنَّةً

    تَقبَّلها الأبناءُ منهُ فأنجبَا

    As did Amr son of Amer beget of Azd

    From captives of 'Uyun al-Qudamis taken in raids

  25. كما أَنْجَبتهُ صيدُ عَمْرو بن عامرٍ

    من الازدِ في عيصِ القَداميس من سَباه

    They routed the kings’ Arabs and non-Arabs alike

    And won sovereignty over the land, east and west

  26. هُم دوّخُّوا عُربَ المُلوكِ وعُجْمها

    وفازوا بملْك الأرض شرقاً ومغرباً

    When summoned in dire straits, you see them

    Staunch lions, triumph embodied in their might

  27. إذا اسْتُصْرخوا في الناَّئباتِ رأَيتهم

    أشداءً فيهم كلُّ أَصْيَد أَغْلبَا

    The day of panic needs keen Huroub with bared blades

    White and swart, fiery yellow like flames

  28. وليتُ حُروبٍ ذو سِنانٍ ومُنْصلٍ

    إذا كان للْضّرغام ناباً ومخلباً

    The tribe’s stalwart fortifies him with flexible mail

    And he wears black iron armor link by link

  29. مُعدٌ ليوِم الرَّوع أبيَض صارماً

    واسْمَرَ خطّياً وأَشقر سَلْهَبَا

    They hold the routes between Qusayy and Qana

    When their steeds dart into the thick of fray

  30. وتُحصِنه من مُحْكَم البيضِ لأمةُ

    ويَلبس مسْرودَ الحديدَ المعقَربا

    To exact vengeance or rescue a victim that cried

    And to protect a neighbor or attain their want

  31. لهم سبل بين القساطل والقنا

    إذا الخيل جالت في الاعنّة شُزّبا

    You may chance on them gathered in their courts

    Sitting proud, adorning splendor and grace

  32. يُصيبون ثاراً أو يُغيثون صارخاً

    ويَحمون جاراً أو ينالون مطلبا

    Elders and youths, you see each honored chief

    Revered, obeyed, like the jurist in holy war

  33. ويوماً تراهزم بين أَفنيةٍ لهم

    جُلوساً يزينون النّديَّ المرتّبا

    Bands pay visit from every side

    If any kin of theirs should pitch camp and settle

  34. كهول وشبّان ترى كلّ سيدٍ

    عزيزٍ مطاع كالفتيق إذا احتسبى

    Only greetings and welcome are heard

    Where their clan resides by travelers going by

  35. تزورهمُ الوفَّادُ من كل جانبٍ

    إذا ما نبا بالقوم ربَعٌ وأَجدَبَا

    Else the croaking groan of laden camels

    And yells of herders amid vipers and lizards

  36. ولا يسْمَع الرّكبانُ بين بيوتهمْ

    من الحيّ إلا القولَ أهلاً ومرحبَا

    And boiling pots of stew set firm

    With seasoned goat meat displaying the feast

  37. وإلاَّ رُغاء الكُوم تعثُر سوقُها

    ولبَاتُها بين الأسِنَّةِ والظُّبا

    Those leading lords, as though I see them still

    When grief and dejection beset me so

  38. وَغَلْيُ القُدور الرَّاسياتِ بتامكٍ

    عَبيطٍ ترى فيه المجالَ المُؤرَّبا

    These two have followed in their footsteps

    And inherited their traits without reserve

  39. أولاكَ الملُوكُ الأوَّلون كأنّني

    أراهْم إذا عانْيتُ ذُهْلاً وَيعْرُبَا

    No excellence or merit they overlook

    Or neglect amid acts of glory and fame

  40. هما سَلكا آثارهم وتَقيَّلا

    خلائقهم لا يَعْدوُان تأدُّبا

    O Father of Hasan! And O sheikh of Arabs!

    In place of them my eye and heart find none

  41. فما غادرَا من كل فنٍ فضيلَةً

    ولا أغفَلا بين المكارم مَذهبا

    God established the prominence of your family

    Like a mansion raised up to the stars’ domain

  42. أبا حَسَنٍ ويَا أَبا العرَبِ أغْتدى

    مكانهما للعين والقَلُبِ مُعْجما

    Granting you bounty, patience and honesty

    And fame made lovely to all souls

  43. بَني اللهُ في بيْتِ العَتيكِ عُلاكُما

    يمنزلةِ أَلْقَتْ على النَّجمِ مركبَا

    Neither guest halted at your abodes neglected

    Nor bands bound for you left without gifts sent

  44. وأعطاكما جوداً وحْلماً وسُؤدداً

    وذكراً إلى كلِّ القُلوبِ مُحَبَّبَا

    Neither the fearful refugee seeking you finds loss

    Nor the hopeful petitioner despairing of relief

  45. فما حَّل رَبعاً منكما الرَّكبُ مُمْحِلاً

    ولا شامَ برْقاً منكُمَ الوفدُ خُلَّبَا

    Nor the praising eulogist in your favor

    Considering other than that splendor truer or better

  46. ولا الخائفُ الَّلاجي مُضاعٌ لدَيكما

    ولا السّائل الرّاجي يؤوبُ مُخَيَّبَا

    So you live out your lives honored lords

    Enjoying the finest existence in these times

  47. ولا المادحُ المُثني بخَير عليكُما

    يَرى غير ذاكَ العز أوْلى وأَصْوَبا

    With feast and offerings on holy days you obtained

    What you wished in prosperity, steady as stars

  48. فعُمّرْتُمَا منْ سيّديَنِ وعشْتُما

    بأحسَن عيْشٍ في الزَّمان وأَطيبا

  49. وبالنَحْر والأضْحَى وبالعيدِ نلتُما

    مآرب في السَّرّاءِ لن تَتقضَّبَا
