1. أَلاّ حيَّ بالأجرعين الطُّلولا

    وحيَّ غداةَ الفراقِ الحمُولا

    Alas! The days of youth and pleasures pure,

    When parting came, how heavy was its lure!

  2. وحيّ المنازلّ أَضحت خَلاءً

    وقد نحَلتها الخُطوبُ النّحولا

    Those camps are vacant, once so full of life;

    Misfortunes dire those tents did then incur.

  3. ودرَّت عليها سجال الغوادي

    وجرت بهاالرامسات الذّيولا

    The vales are flooded by the rains that fall;

    Herds wander grazing on the meadows floor.

  4. وكنَّا عهدنا بتلكَ المغاني

    جميعاً قطيناً وحياً حُلُولا

    Those haunts were filled with song and drink and mirth;

    Pure whiteness mixed with every tint obscure.

  5. وبيضاً ربائب من كل خودٍ

    تُشاكل أُم الغزال الخَذولا

    You'd see, if you desired, a rosy cheek,

    Ample, breathtaking, hair of raven hue,

  6. تريك إذا شئتَ وجهاً مضيثاً

    وفرعاً أَثيثاً وطرفاً كحيلا

    Fair hips and waist so delicately weak,

    A polished throat, and blushing cheeks in view,

  7. وردفا نبيلا وخصراً بتيلا

    وجيداً صقيلا وخداً أَسيلا

    Lips like pure honey and wine's crimson streak,

    Perfumed with musk their charm would then renew.

  8. وثغراً ثناياه شهداً وخمراً

    يعلّ به المسكُ والزّنجَبيلا

    I see you riding forth when dawn appears,

    The caravan preparing to withdraw,

  9. أَجِدَّك راعك زَمُّ المطايا

    غداة أَرادَ الخليطُ الرّحيلا

    Your mantle flashing like the lightning's spears,

    Outshining lamps that on your camel saw.

  10. وشاقك ضوء من البَرق يسمو

    ضياء المصابيحُ تذكي الفتيلا

    The morning breeze blows fragrance to your ears;

    The doves are cooing, your departure flaws!

  11. وجري الصَّبا بنسيم الخزامى

    وصوتُ الحمامة تدعو هَديلا

    Oh curse the joys of youth that swift decay!

    Curse the vain shadows that entice then flee!

  12. ألا قاتل الله عيش التصابي

    وقاتل ظلّ الشباب الظّليلا

    Ah, once our days were filled with drink and play

    'Midst charming songs and maids of high degree.

  13. وأيامنا بين طيب المغاني

    وحسن الغواني فُضولاً فضولا

    Though now we ruled o'er realms of disarray,

    No revels slaked our souls' satiety.

  14. وإذ نحن في حكم أَهل الملاهي

    نطيع النّدامى وتعصي العَذولا

    We snatched a patch of night to robe our form,

    Trailed tails of raiment, foolish in our glee,

  15. ونلبس من ليل شَرخٍ سُتوراً

    ونسحب من ذيل عيشٍ فضولا

    Strolled through the garden as the stars adorn,

    Where sparkling eyes and flowers enticed us free -

  16. ونغدو على الروض يُبدي إلينا

    عيوناً من النَّور والزَّهر حولا

    With upright youth whose speech brings joy like wine;

    The sweetest music and the cup passed round.

  17. بفتيان صدق كرام تعاطي

    سماعاً لذيذاً وكأساً شَمولاً

    Then barred from revels, we were told: "Decline!

    For ye are aged, and such joys unbound."

  18. حمانا الملاهي بأَنّا كبرنا

    ولم تشفِ منها النفوسَ الغليلا

    I dyed excuse with the gray hairs that shine

    And honed my spears, though strength in me was bound.

  19. خضبتُ اعتذارَ المشيب عذاري

    وأَحسنت مثل النصال النّصولا

    The nights, alas, taught well misfortune's wheel!

    My star rose high, then sank into the ground.

  20. بلى أَنّني عرَّفتني الّليالي

    من الحادثات صُروفاً شُكولا

    Hast thou not heard how I was tried by all?

    How friends betrayed, lovers proved unsound?

  21. أَلم تدر أَنيَ جرّبت كلاً

    وزرتُ الرّفيق وذقتُ الخليلا

    I met but envy or deceit withal,

    Complaints from souls by grief forever bound.

  22. فلم أَلقَ في النّاس إلا خَؤوناً

    وإلا حسوداً وإلا مَلولا

    As beasts some men gained riches, then pretense -

    Though idiots they - to play the sage profound.

  23. ومثل البهائم نالوا حظوظاً

    فصاروا بها يدَّعون العقولا

    Perforce, if true friends are not heaven-sent,

    I smile on fools, though knaves my soul would wound.

  24. برغمي أَواخي خَؤونا قَطوعاً

    إذا لم أُصادفُ نصوحاً وَصولا

    Alas, sincerity has largely spent;

    Few with pure hearts and deeds are ever found.

  25. وقد ذهبَ النّاسُ أهل التّصافي

    وأهل الفضائل إلاّ قليلا

    When we avoid the scornful folk of vice,

    Among the righteous our salvation's bound.

  26. إذا نحن خفنا إساءةَ قومٍ

    وجدنا إلى المحسنين السّبيلا

    Abu Hasan is refuge for the wise,

    His noble deeds shine luminous around.

  27. وجدنا أبا الحسنِ الخيرِ ذهلاً

    لحسنى الأمور قؤولاَ فعولا

    His hospitality all needs supplies;

    His generosity without compare is bound.

  28. يفيد النّوال ويوفي العطايا

    ويسدي الصّنيع ويولي الجميلا

    To his abode, the destitute arise;

    Though lost, by him the hopeless may be found.

  29. إلى داره للعُفاةانتجاعٌ

    إِذا ما تَشَكَّى العفاة المحولا

    His halls expand, however small the floor,

    When guests pour in and space seems tightly bound.

  30. وفي ربعه للوفود اتساعٌ

    إذا ضاقت الأرض عَرضاً وطولا

    Who comes in need, leaves wanting nevermore,

    For his concern o'erflows without a bound.

  31. إذا ما مُلمٌ أتى لم يحاول

    على غير معروف ذهل نزولا

    We find in his benevolence the key

    To counter ills, a guardian ever sound.

  32. كأنا وجدنا ببذل الأيادي

    ودفع الملمات ذهلا كفيلا

    Mankind has lost the path of piety;

    His deeds, alas, shine not enough around.

  33. أَرى النّاس ضَلّوا طَريق المعالي

    فلم يجعلوا فعل ذهلٍ دليلا

    Know they not blessings come by charity?

    The miser gains no lofty place unbound!

  34. أَلم يعلَموا كيف تؤتَى المعالي

    وأن العُلى لا تواتي البخيلا

    A youth sincere is seldom seen by day;

    At anger he reacts not rash, unbound.

  35. فتىً لا تَرى منه في العرف رْيثا

    ولا هو في السّخط يلقى عجولا

    His firm resolves, like swords in battle's fray,

    Clash out a piercing note - a stirring sound!

  36. له عزماتٌ إذا ما انتضاها

    سمعت لهافي الدّواهي صليلا

    His keen discernment cuts like blade held tight,

    No common wit in him will e'er be found.

  37. ورأي كحدِّ الحُسام اليماني

    على أنّه لا يُداني الفلولا

    If from the mob I turned in sheer despite

    And scorned the envious souls that would confound,

  38. لو أني ذهلتُ عن الناس طراً

    وأْلقى على الحاسدين الخمولا

    God honored Duhl in glory and in might,

    Though thanklessness his name did oft surround.

  39. لقد شرف الله بالمجد ذُهلاً

    لما اسطعت عن شكر ذهل ذهولا

    The Azd's renown grew ever more polite;

    Deeds beautiful, fame just - his feats redound!

  40. وزيدت به الأَزدُ فضلاً شريفاً

    وذكرا جميلا ومجداً جليلا

    We count kings when Duhl's clan enumerate,

    Both youth and elder we assess and bound.

  41. نعدّ الملوك إذا ماعددنا

    من الأزد شبانها والكهولا

    The lofty ones whose hands give freely forth,

    Whose roots stand firm, their branches spread around,

  42. أولئك أهل العُلى والأيادي

    أنافوا فروعاً وعزّوا أصولا

    They are the groves that shield from burning wrath

    When gales blow harsh and ruin spreads unbound.

  43. هم المطعمونعضبيطَ المهاري

    إذا الرِّيح هبّت بليل بليلا

    Their refuge fortifies when perils swarm,

    Or if they seek, achievements will be found.

  44. إذا مااستجيروا أعزّوا واغنوا

    وإن طلبوا أدركوها الذُّحولا

    Their swords in every land protect from harm,

    Drive off the unjust, foil the fool unbound.

  45. سيوفهمُ في جميع النّواحي

    تكفّ الظّلوم وتنهى الجَهولا

    They leave each rebel humbled in alarm,

    And every hardy knave they have uncrownd.

  46. هم تَركوا كلَّ عاسٍ مُطيعاً

    وهمغادروا كل صعب ذَلولا

    Through them, the faith is guarded near and far,

    Deep roots that never can be undermined.

  47. بهم منعة الدّين في كل قُطْرٍ

    فللدين أجبلة لن تزولا

    The prophets they assist in every star,

    As the first Muslims gave their faith its ground.

  48. ونصر الأئمة في كل مصرٍ

    كما نصر الأوّلون الرَّسولا

    To Duhl they passed their glory from afar,

    His efforts gained what had not been divined.

  49. هم ورَّثوا المجد ذهلا فكانت

    مساعيه غرَّته والحُجُولا

    God reward Duhl and sons of Duhl's domain

    With lasting bliss, and life prolonged be found!

  50. جزى الله ذُهلا وأولاد ذُهلٍ

    نعيماً مقيماً وعُمراً طويلا

    May generations of their house remain,

    From honor's light and beauty know no bound!

  51. بدور التّمام ضياءً وحسناً

    فلا عاين الدَّهرُ فيهم أفولا
