1. يا دارَ جيرتنا والحيّ حُيّيت

    واخْتال مغناكِ في زيِّ وتَبْييتِ

    O home of our neighbor and lively quarter, I bid you farewell,

    As your songs have changed in attire and spent the night awake.

  2. أَين الذين حَلَلْنا في جوارِهم

    شَطَّ الحِمى قبلَ توْديع وتَشْتيتِ

    Where are those with whom we were neighbors,

    Before the fever separated us with farewells and scattering?

  3. لا غيْر أنَّ الهَوى ممّا يهُجَّهُ

    جَرْيُ النَّسسم وتغْريدُ الأفاخيتِ

    Save that passion from what enflames it,

    Is the scent of breeze and chirping of birds.

  4. أَومَا تَنوّرَت من نارٍ مُشَيَّعَةِ

    بالمندل الرَّطِب لم يُقْبس بكبريتِ

    Or has it not been kindled by lingering fires,

    With damp kindling that sparked not with flint?

  5. ياحُسنَ أَيّامِنا والدَّارُ جامعةٌ

    للأصْفياء بحَلّ المَرح من هيتِ

    O beautiful days of ours, and home once gathered

    The sincere with loosened collar and jest.

  6. والرَّبع للحيّ في رَوْضاتِه سُبلٌ

    ومرتع بين تلْعاتٍ وتصْويتِ

    And the quarter for the lively in its meadows has paths

    And pasture between hills and valleys.

  7. والمُزنُ هازجَة والأرضُ واشجَةٌ

    والشَّمْسُ خارجةٌ من آخر الحُوتِ

    The full moons are intimate and the land is verdant,

    The sun rises from the tail of the fish.

  8. والأُنَّسُ الغيدُ بينَ الوَشي راتعة

    دُعُجُ النَّواظِر كالعُفر المَباهيتِ

    Pleasant company amid the vegetation lying down

    Sedating gazes like scattered pearls.

  9. من كل فرعاء معَلْولُ مرَّجلُها

    بالطَّوق والقُرْطِ بين النّحْرِ والّليتِ

    From every branch its pendant fruit is bent

    With necklace and earring between neck and breast.

  10. تكسو الهوى وَرد خدّيها وتبصرهُ

    من ناظريها بها روتٍ وماروتِ

    Passion adorns its rosy cheeks and gazes from its eyes

    At it with a look of delight and affection.

  11. تنصٌ أَحسنَ من جيد الجَداية في

    سِمطْين من لؤلؤ حُفاً بياقوتِ

    It whispers softer than the neck of a lamb in

    Two braids of pearls in chokers of rubies.

  12. وللفتى بين رَيْعانِ الصَّبا سُبُلٌ

    إلى مِقَات الغواني غير ممقوتِ

    And the youth amid the thickets of youth has paths

    To battlefields of beauties never spurned.

  13. فيستعيد به أهلُ الحلوم إلى

    غيّ الصّبا ودواعي كلِّ طاغوتِ

    So he restores to owners of cheek

    The ignorance of youth and zeal for every tyrant.

  14. يمتُّ في كل فن من شبيبته

    إلى الحسانِ بحَبل غير مبتوتِ

    He takes pride in every art of his boyhood

    To beauty with an unsevered rope.

  15. مُرْخَي العذارين مأواه ومَسرَحهُ

    بينَ العَذارى وربّاتِ الحوانيتِ

    Relaxed are the virgins, playground and theater,

    Among the virgins and adorers of songs.

  16. صَبا الفتى ما صَبا والبيض وامقَة

    ولا تقابل في لهو وتيكيتِ

    The youth sported as youth does, while the white and rosy cheeks

    Do not deny play and banter.

  17. حتَّى إذا الشَّيب أَجثى في مفارقه

    فبغضه في الغواني بعد تبكيتِ

    Until when old age kneels to bid him farewell,

    He detests in songs after lamenting.

  18. أَمسى الكبير يُواري شَيبَ لمَّتهِ

    خوفَ القلى ويداري قلَّة القوتِ

    The elder hides the shame of his white hair,

    Fearing poverty, and avoids scarce provisions.

  19. يُزجي القوافيَ من أَشْعارِه مِدَحاً

    معَ العُفاة سراةً في السّباريتِ

    He woos rhymes in his poems with praise

    Foolishly babbling in taverns.

  20. حتَّى تَؤمَّ أَبا عبد الأله وقد

    آليتُ ما حَظُّنا منهُ بمألوتِ

    Until he accompanies Abu Abdullah and has attained

    All we hoped from Him for reward.

  21. محمّد الأريحيُّ ابْنُ المُعَمَّر مَنْ

    قضى له اللهُ فضْلَ المجدِ والصيتِ

    Muhammad al-Arihi ibn al-Mu'ammar who

    God granted excellence of glory and fame.

  22. تَرى الوفودَ صُفوفاً حول عرْصَته

    مثلَ الحجيجُ عكوفاً في المواقيتِ

    Delegations in rows around his porch

    Like pilgrims standing at appointed times.

  23. لدَى أَغرَّ يمانٍ من بني عُمَرٍ

    مُباركٍ مشْرقِ العِرنّين إصْليتِ

    With the most eloquent of the clan of blessed Umar,

    Of glorious descent from Isly branch.

  24. مهذبِ الراي متطيق بحجَّته

    يومَ الجدال عن العورآء سكيتِ

    Refined in opinion, convincing in argument

    Silent in debate protecting the vulnerable.

  25. مشهّرٍ لم يزدْه النّعتُ معرفةً

    وهو الذي فاق فضلاً كلَّ منعوتِ

    Renowned whom titles increased not in renown,

    For he surpassed all the titled in merit.

  26. مُسْتمْسكٍ بمتين من قْوى سببٍ

    إلى الأَعزّة من قحْطانَ ممْتوتِ

    Clinging to the strong tie of a noble lineage

    To the Al Aziz from Qahtan severed.

  27. أبقى أبوهُ لهُ بيتاً أبو عُمرٍ

    يَنمي إلى سبأ الصّيد الصّناتيتِ

    His father left him the house of Abu Umar

    That brings increase to Sabian arrowsmiths.

  28. بيتٌ حمتهُ كُماة الأزد من يمنٍ

    بكل اجدل يهوي تحت عفريتِ

    A house whose protection amongst Kuma's of Azd from Yemen

    Against each audacious descending with jinn.

  29. وكل أجرد ممسود القَرى شنجٍ

    أَنساؤه أشدَق اللَّحيين مَهْرُوتِ

    And every dirty-clothed Hamdan charging with courage

    Whose women are most chaste and veiled.

  30. عَزُّوا ولا يأمنُ الأعداءُ بأسهُمُ

    بغارة الخيل صُبْحاً أو بتَبْييتِ

    They backed him so enemies dread their might

    In morning raid or by night.

  31. هُمُ أَحلُّوا أَبا عبد الالهِ بها

    في رأْسٍ أرْعَنَ بيتاً غيرَ مَنْحوتِ

    They settled Abu Abdullah within its

    Unhewn peak built of stone.

  32. ساد المُلوكِ أَبو عبد الإلهِ بما

    أولادهُ من غيْر تَشْريفٍ وتثْبيتِ

    Abu Abdullah led kings though his sons

    Got no advancement or confirmation.

  33. فمَا استطاعوا لفضلٍ ما اسْتَطَاعَ ولم

    يُؤتوا من الفضلِ والعلياءِ ما أُوتي

    For they could not attain the merit he attained

    And were not granted of merit and nobility what he was granted.

  34. إذا مَعاشرُ عن طرق العُلى لُفِتوا

    أُلفيتَه شمَّرياً غيْر مَلْفُوتِ

    If bands deviated from the path of glory,

    His band was resolute, undivided.

  35. ما أَبعدَ الْحَمدَ ممن مالَه حُرَمٌ

    بين الحُصونِ وأَجوافِ التَّوابيتِ

    How far from praise is one whose possessions are castles

    Among fortresses and caverns of coffins!

  36. والْحَمْدُ حقُّ أُبي عبد الإله فتىً

    يُفيدك الجَزل سهلاَ غَيْرَ مَعْتوتِ

    But praise is truly due to Abu Abdullah, a youth

    Who benefits you with plenty, not stingy.

  37. فزّادهُ الله بين المُكْرمات هدىً

    إلى سبيلٍ عن الحُسّادِ عِمّيتِ

    So God increased him with guidance

    To a path safe from envious blindness.

  38. ونقْمَةً لولي منهُ مُنْتفعٍ

    ونقمَة لعدوٍّ عنهُ مكْبوتِ

    And vengeance against a rebel benefited by him

    And vengeance against a foe repressed by him.

  39. ودَامَ ربعُ أبي عبد الإله حِمىً

    للْخَائفين ومأوى كلّ سُبْروتِ

    And the quarter of Abu Abdullah remains a refuge

    For the fearful and shelter of all outcasts.
