1. عرّج على رسم الطِّللْ

    أبلته أحقابِ الطِّيَلْ

    He passed by the ruins of encampments

    Whose traces time has effaced

  2. من الجَنوب والشَّملْ

    فهو كموشيٍّ الحُلَلْ

    From south to north

    Like a Yemeni cloak or applied kohl

  3. أو كخضابٍ قد نَصَل

    وابْك بدمعٍ هاتِنِ

    Weep for him with copious tears

    Over this desolate abode

  4. على الخليط البائِنِ

    بعد الأنيس القاطِنِ

    After its amiable dweller

    Who lies in the bosom of wild beasts

  5. حفٍ لدى الظعائِنِ

    بين الحُدوج والكِللْ

    Among the sand dunes and ruins

    In every enclosure

  6. وضمنَ كلَّ هودج

    كلِّ غزال عَوْهجِ

    Is a delicate gazelle

    Adorned and embellished

  7. مسَوّرٍ مدملج

    يرنو بطَرفٍ أدْعجِ

    Gazing with a languid eye

    In which kohl and surma mingle

  8. فيه أحورار وكَحَل

    أغيد محصور الشّوى

    My heart pines with restrained passion

    I waste away without consolation

  9. أهضم من غير الطَّوى

    يهيج أشجان الهَوى

    Love kindles my innermost feelings

    Powerful wine makes me delirious

  10. يوهي من الصّبّ القُوى

    أهيف رجراج الكَفْلِ

    A gazelle sings, separated from its herd

    Dawn steals through its opening

  11. ظبي رنا عن فَرْقهِ

    صبْحٌ سرى من فَلْقه

    A full moon rises on the horizon

    A branch emerges in its leaves

  12. بدرٌ بَدا في أُفقه

    غصنٌ بدا في وُرقه

    Bending gently, perfectly proportioned

    Charming companions, delightful equals

  13. غُضْاً تَثَنَّى واعتدلْ

    كَواعبٌ أوانِسُ

    Graceful, radiant maidens

    Slender waists between jewels and necklaces

  14. عقائِلٌ نَفائِسَ

    نواعم شوامِسُ

    Long are their plaits

    Smooth their cheeks

  15. خرائدٌ كوانِسُ

    بين الحُليّ والحُلَلْ

    Lovely their breasts

    Slender their statures

  16. طويلة جيودُها

    أسيلة خدُودها

    White and dark-skinned

    Though the sun has tanned their cheeks

  17. مليحة نهودها

    رشيقة قدودها

    And disheveled their curly hair

    They melt into wine and honey

  18. فيها صدود ومَيَلْ

    بيض وفيها غَيَدُ

    I said to the critics

    Is not love and wine enough for me

  19. وإن طَلاَها جَيدُ

    وفي الشعور الجَعَد

    After drinking from the stream?

    Among wine-skins and revelry

  20. وفي الثنايا البرَدُ

    تذوب خمراً وعَسَلْ

    And drinking golden grape unripe

    That shows you pearls in a cup

  21. قلت لأهل العذلِ

    حسبكم هل شُغُلى

    Causing tipsiness in drinking

    Dazzling with its brilliance

  22. غير الصِّبا والغزلِ

    والعلَّ بعد النهل

    Leaving its vessel

    Showing you through its clarity

  23. بين خُمَار وثملْ

    وشرب صهباء العنب

    What lies beyond

    Like tears in the blue of kohl

  24. صفْراء لم تصلَ الّلهبْ

    تريك في الكأس حبب

    Revelry is my greatest joy

    When the rhythm of melody rises

  25. كَلُؤلؤ على ذهب

    يحدثُ للشرب خَبَل

    A voice laments on the flute

    And the lute thrills wildly

  26. تختال من ضيائها

    تزول عن إنائها

    To the slow beat during light rain

    It blooms with all kinds of flowers

  27. يريك من صفائها

    ما حلَّ من ورائها

    Scented by the morning breeze

    Or laden with fruit

  28. كالدَّمع في زرق المقل

    والّلهو لي فيه أربْ

    As if a bouquet of flowers

    None but the excellent, devout

  29. إذا حدا ركب الطّرب

    صوت على النّاي انتحب

  30. ورنّة العود اصطخب

    بين بسيط في غب المطرْ

    The glorified King

    Ruling above Saturn

  31. يزهو بأنواع الزّهْر

    فتَّقه ريح السَّحر

    Isaac is higher than a king

    In honor and glory I hold you

  32. أو أينعت به الثّمر

    كأنه ورد كمل

    The path of truth you walked

    And the mansions of planets you conquered

  33. أبى الرّقاع الأوحد

    إسحاق زاكي المحتد

    Effortlessly you moved between stars

    In your court a lion in its den

  34. نجل الرّضى محمّد

    الملك الممجَّدِ

    A raincloud in its downpour

    The sea in its deep swells

  35. المعتلي على زُحل

    إسحاق أعلى من ملك

    A king whose command is done

    The land quakes in awe of his generosity

  36. بالعز والمجد أحتبك

    ومنهج الحق سلك

    And joy at his presence

    For seekers of his favors

  37. واحتلَّ أبراج الفَلك

    وبالسّماكين انتقل

    Yearning for their success

    Giving what is asked

  38. يضحى لدى حجابه

    كالليث وسط غابِهِ

    I stand tall, ready for matters

    As lightning flashes in clouds

  39. والغيث في ربابهِ

    والبحر في عبابهِ

    If he were to be generous one day, and bestow

    Throne and court flourish through him

  40. ملك إذا قال فَعَل

    يهتز من سَماحهِ

    Pulpit wanders proudly

    Boasting the time it recalls him

  41. وشدّة ارتياحه

    لطالب امتحانه

    Through his name empires rise

    Our place is to stand

  42. شوقاً إلى نجاحهِ

    وبذله لما سأل

    Before him in reverence

    However we describe him

  43. إلى المعالي ناهضُ

    وللأمور رائضُ

    All acknowledging

    His overwhelming merit

  44. كما يصوب العَارض

    والبرق فيه وامض

    O sun of faith, you remain

    He who hopes in your favor

  45. إن جاد يوماً أو وبل

    به السّرير يفخرُ

    Your favor's key is sufficient

    From you, wishes and purpose

  46. والدّست منه يزهر

    وقد يتيه المنبرُ

    You are the ultimate hope

    So take them like scattered pearls

  47. فخراً أوانَ يذكر

    وباسمه تسمو الدّول

    Arranged in ornate rhyme

    Better than ink's infusion

  48. مقامنا أن نقفُ

    بين يديه شرفُ

    Sweeter than rain's draught

    The sun in a poet

  49. لَنَا ومهمَا نصفُ

    كلًّ به معْترف

    Teeming sea of the mind

    Casting gems

  50. بالفضل الحمد اشتمل

    بقيت يا شمس الدّنا

    And every meaning of a poet

    Remains as a parable to him

  51. ومن له على الثّنا

    كَفاك مفتاحُ الغِنا

    Singular poetry of his time

    None gained from his verse

  52. منك الأماني والمنى

    وأنت غاية الأمل

    In praise or thanks

    Except the fairness of his mention

  53. وهاكَها مثل الدّررْ

    نظم قوافيها الغُرَرْ

    And the least share

    I have scattered masterworks

  54. أحسن من وشي الحِبَرْ

    أطيب من غب المَطَرْ

    That seek every horizon

    Wherein the famed would envy

  55. والشّمس من شاعر

    زاخرِ بحر الخاطر

    If an era had prospered me

    I'd have gained wealth quickly

  56. يقذف بالجواهِرِ

    وكلّ معنى شاعرِ

  57. يبقى له ضرب المثل

    نظمُ وحيد عصره

  58. لم يستفد من شعرِه

    في مدحه وشكره

  59. إلاّ جميل ذكرهِ

    وحظَّه النّزر الأقل

  60. لي محكمات شُرّدُ

    بكل أُفق تنشَدُ

  61. فيها المسمّى يحسد

    لو أن دَهراً يُسعدُ
