1. يا مُزنةَ الصَّيف من دَرّ الحيا صُوبي

    بواكفِ القطْرِ مُنْهلّ الشَّآبيبِ

    O summer fragrance from the pearls of life, turn towards me

    With the dripping of rain, the place of youthful streams

  2. على منازل أُلاَّفٍ عهدتهم

    من ذات جوس إِلى ذات العَراقيبٍ

    On the dwellings of those I befriended

    From the land of Jaw to the land of arabs

  3. مغني الهوى ومحلّ اللَّهو وكان لنا

    بين الأَّخلاءِ والبيض والرَّعابيبِ

    The singing passion and the place of joy that was ours

    Among the bosom friends, the white, and the obedient maids

  4. اليوم نزْداد فيها خُردّاً عُرباً

    يَفتنَّنا بفنونِ الحُسن والطيبِ

    Today we grow among them, little refined bedouins

    Seduced by the arts of beauty and grace

  5. وهنَّ يختلن من دَلٍّ ومن دَهشٍ

    كأنهنَّ الدمى بينَ المحاريبِ

    And they flutter from languor and swoon

    As if they were statues among the veils

  6. يُصْبحن يَحملن أقمارأ يحُفَّ بها

    سُود الذَّوائب في حُمر الجلابيبِ

    Dawn bearing moons surrounded

    By the black of plaits in the red cloaks

  7. يا حُسنَ ذلكَ لوناً قد برزنَ به

    بُحسن لوْنين من قانٍ وغربيبِ

    O that beauty of color which they displayed

    With the beauty of two hues, deep red and green

  8. من كلِّ مرسلة رُدْن قميص على

    رخْص الأنامل بالحناءِ مخصوبِ

    Every messenger returned their shirt at the hands

    Of henna dyed fingers on the wrists

  9. وكلَّ ساحبةٍ ذيل الازارِ على

    فعم المخلْخل غضٍ غير منهوبِ

    And every trailing train on the hips

    Under sheer billowing untorn garments

  10. عِشنا بأحسن حالِ ثمت أنقلَبتْ

    والدَّهرُ صاحبُ علاَّتِ وتقليبِ

    We lived in the best of states, but then it changed

    And time is fickle in affliction and upheaval

  11. يا طولَ ذكرِ أَوِ دّاءٍ فَقَدتُهُمُ

    أَبْقى عليّ هَواهمْ طولَ تَعذيبي

    O the long memory of those I lost

    Their passion remains, tormenting me endlessly

  12. إذا تذكَّرتُ عهْدَ اْلَحيَّ جُدْتُ لهُ

    منَ اْلجفُونِ بِمُرْفضٍّ ومَسْكُوبِ

    When I remember the dwellings of life, I overflow

    From my eyelids in profusion of streaming tears

  13. وقلْتُ يا عْينُ بالدّمْع الغَزيرِ كِفي

    وأَنتِ يا نفْسُ من حرَّ الجَوى ذوبي

    And I say O eyes, cease your copious weeping

    And you, O soul, melt from the heat of passion

  14. لا صبَر للقَلْبِ إلاَّ أَن أُعَلِّلَهُ

    يَوْماً بلَهْوٍ منَ الصَّهْباء مَجْلوبِ

    My heart can have no patience but to console it

    One day with revelry of wine mixed and poured

  15. نَمسي ندامَى على الصَّهْباءِ نَشرْ بُها

    مع كُلِّ أَرْوَعَ للصَّهباءِ شِرّيبِ

    We will spend the evening drunk on wine, spreading it

    With all the most wondrous wines for revelry

  16. أُولي حجىً ونُهى صفَّى ضمائرهَم

    صَافي المُدامةِ منْ صِرْفٍ ومَقْطوبِ

    Of excellent company whose conscience is pure

    From strained refined wine in a measured pouring

  17. إذا هَوَتْ في فَم الإِبريقِ بارِقَةٌ

    كأنَّها كَوكبٌ يَنْقَصّْ في الكوبِ

    When it falls into the cup gleaming

    Like a star fading into the goblet

  18. نَرْجُو منَ الخَمْرِ أَن نسْلوُ فتوُرِثنا

    شَوْقاً إلى وَطنٍ أَوْ وجْهِ محْبُوبِ

    We hope from the wine to quell our listlessness

    With yearning for a homeland or face of a loved one

  19. بِمَ التَّعَللَِّ واْلأيَامُ تَحْمِلُنَا

    على صُروفِ الدَّواهي واْلأَعَاجيبِ

    Why make excuses when the days carry us

    On the turns of time and wonders

  20. وكيْفَ نسْلوا بلَهْو أَوْ يَحقّْ لنا

    تجَنَّبُ اللَّهْو عنْ حِلْمٍ وتجْريبِ

    And how can we be solaced by revelry or deserve

    To avoid it with wisdom and experience

  21. أَمّا الغِنى فسَؤُتينيهِ مُرْتَحلي

    من ذاتِ جَوسٍ مطايانا لتَغْريبِ

    As for wealth, my traveling will bring it to me

    From the land of Jaw on my traveling steed

  22. أَقولْ للْحَرْفِ لّما أَنْ تَخَونَّها

    عَضّْ الوَجى بيْنَ تَهْجيرٍ وتَأويبِ

    I say to the ruins, when you are betrayed

    Bite the pain between abandonment and desolation

  23. لا تسأمي عادَةَ الترحالِ واْحتملي

    مَسَّ الكلالِ وأَجوازَ الفَلا جوبي

    Do not grow weary of traveling and bear

    The touch of weariness and traversing the deserts

  24. إلى الرَّئيسِ ابنِ عبدِ اللهِ إنّ لَهُ

    رَبعاً عزيزاً ومولىً غيْر مَحْرْوبِ

    To the ruler, son of Abdullah, he has

    A dear homeland and guardian not defeated

  25. إلى أَعَزّ بني الدّْنيا وأَشرَفَهم

    من الأَعاجِمِ طُراً والأَعاريبِ

    To the dearest of mankind and its noblest

    Of non-Arabs and Arabs

  26. إلى جوادٍ شُجِاعٍ ذي ندىً وَرَدىً

    بالجود والبأسِ مَرْجُوٍ ومَرهوبِ

    To the generous, brave, man of help and protection

    By generosity and might, hopeful and feared

  27. حامي الذّمار عزيز الجار عادته

    اطعامُ غرثانَ أَو تنْفيسُ مكروبِ

    Who protects the helpless, honors his neighbor, his way

    Is to feed the starving and relieve the anguished

  28. ماضي العزيمة محمود شمائلهُ

    مطّهر الجَيبِ من عارٍ ومن حوبِ

    Resolute, praiseworthy of traits

    Who purifies his pocket of shame and flaw

  29. يعلو بهِ فضلُ همَّاتِ المُلوك إلى

    أعلى وأشْرَفَ مُحْتَلٍ ومَطْلوبِ

    Through him virtue rises above the aspirations of kings

    To the highest and noblest heights and desired goals

  30. ساس الامورَ بتجريبٍ وثقّفهُ

    رَوْضُ الزّمان بتأديبِ وتَهْذيبِ

    He manages affairs with experience and his upbringing

    Was nurtured by time with discipline and refinement

  31. حتَّى اسْتَقامَ لبيباً غيرَ مُغْتَرٍ

    بالحادِثاتِ زعيماً غيْرَ مَخْلوبِ

    Until his mind grew straight, not fooled

    By events, leading not misled

  32. فليهنئ الغُضُبَ الخِدّان عِزَّنُهْم

    بلَيْثِ غابٍ إلى الحدّان منْسُوبِ

    So his angered cheeks rejoice in their glory

    Of a formidable lion, attributed to lion cubs

  33. ليْيثٌ هصورٌ أبو شِبْلَيْنِ جانبُهُ

    مُجنّبٌ وحِماهُ غيرُ مقْروبِ

    A burly lion, father of the two cubs, whose side

    Is protected and his sanctuary unbreached

  34. إنْ كابَرَ الْزيرَ مُغْتَراً بصَزْلتِهِ

    أصابهُ بنيوبٍ أَو مَخاليبِ

    If he ever resisted out of ignorance of his weakness

    He would be struck by fangs or claws

  35. حتَّى أَقام ابنُ عبدُ الله كائلَها

    عدلاً وأَلّف بين الشاة والذيبِ

    Until the son of Abdullah subdued him

    With justice and made peace between the sheep and wolf

  36. حَمَى قُراهَا فأضحِت كلُّ مُنزلةٍ

    ممْنوعةُ الرّبع من نهْبٍ وتَخريبِ

    He protected its villages so each dwelling

    Became forbidden to plunder and ruin

  37. والعزُّ والباسُ في الحدّان إنّهمُ

    أهلُ البسالَةِ من مُرد ومن شيبِ

    Glory and might are with the cheeks, they are

    The people of courage, young and old

  38. سَراةُ شمْسِ مُلوكِ الأزْدِ من يمنٍ

    خيرُ البَريَّةِ حقاً غيْر تكْذيبِ

    Cavalry of the suns of Azd kings from Yemen

    The best of humankind, truly without lies

  39. أُسدٌ لها الخيلُ آجامٌ مخالبْها

    زرقْ الأْسنّة في سُم الأْنابيبِ

    A lion whose horses have grasping claws

    Blue tongues amidst the snake fangs

  40. تَعْدو بسضكتَّهم في يوْم غارتهم

    سَوابقُ الأْعوجّيات اليعابيبِ

    Galloping in the day of their raid

    Outstripping the loping hyenas

  41. من كلِّ شَيْظَمةٍ جردْاء سَلْهبةٍ

    أو شَيْظهَمِ أَجْرَدٍ كالسّيد سرْحوبِ

    From every long-necked bald dun mare

    Or bald-faced bay like the horse Sirhoub

  42. إذا أَثار غماماً نقعها مَطَرَت

    دَمَ العدى بْينَ مَطْعونِ ومَضْروبِ

    When he stirs up a cloud, its drizzle rains

    The blood of foes between stabbed and struck

  43. وكان غبّ ثراهُ في مرابعها

    مرعىٍ من الأمن في مرعى اليعاسيبِ

    And the absence of his radio was in its stables

    A pasture of security among pastures of hyenas

  44. أَبا المغيرة إنَّ الله خصّكَ من

    شيَم المَعَالي بعزٍ غَيْر مسْلوبِ

    O Abu Mugheera, God has singled you out

    With virtues of glory never stripped away

  45. والمْجدُ عندَكَ لمّا صِرتَ رائدَها

    نارٌ على جَبل علاي الشنَّاخيبِ

    And glory in your leadership when you took its reigns

    Was a fire on Mount Ulai Al-Shannakhi

  46. هذا وهمَّتُكَ العُلْيا ونيّتَكَ ال

    حُسْنى ورأُيك مأمونٌ بتَصويبِ

    This while your lofty resolve and good intent

    And prudent opinion are secure from error

  47. لا تَحْسَبنْ لكَ مثْلاً في طلاب عُلىً

    وقود جيْشٍ وترْهيبٍ وترْغيبِ

    Do not consider yourself to have an equal among seekers

    Of military leadership, intimidation, and incentive

  48. أَنا لكَ اللهُ أقصى ما تُحاوِلهُ

    في لبْس ذيل من السرّاء مسْحوبِ

    I ask God to grant you the utmost you endeavor

    In wearing the train of fortunate days drawn out
