1. هكذا الحرُّ إذا الحرّ افتَقرْ

    يَستقلَّ الحرصَ أو يشكو القَدَرْ

    Thus the free man, when in need,

    Bears fortune or complains of fate,

  2. واستمدَّ الخير من معْدَنِهِ

    وسلِ الحاجةَ من وجه الظَّفَرْ

    And draws good from its origin,

    Asking relief from triumph’s face.

  3. خَلَّ نزْوى واستَجرْ في سَمَدٍ

    بسماحِ الأزْدِ من بُخْلِ مُضَرْ

    He left rest to toil on the plain

    With Sa’d’s generosity, not Mu’dhir’s greed,

  4. وأبو القاسم يمّمهُ تكنْ

    مثلَ غيث جاد أو بحر زَخرْ

    And my lord motivates him, making

    Him like rain that pours or sea that swells,

  5. سيدٌ يهتزّ بأساً ونَدىً

    كاهتزاز الصّارم العَضبِ الذَّكَرْ

    A chief who shakes with might and bounty

    As the angry, valiant sword shakes clear.

  6. قسمَ الله العُلى قسمَ أبي

    القاسمِ الخَيرِ عليّ بنِ عُمَرْ

    By God’s will the Exalted, and my father’s—

    The best of men—’Ali son of ‘Umar.
