1. لعاً لكَ مما أحْدثته خُطوبُ

    ومن نائباتِ الدهرِ حين تَنوبُ

    Alas for what afflictions you have caused, O fate!

    And for the calamities of time when they befall.

  2. ولا سُرَّ منك الحاسدون بنكبةٍ

    ولا كان للمكروهِ فيك نصيبُ

    Your enviers were not gladdened by your downfall,

    Nor did misfortune gain a portion of you.

  3. وماذا يسرُّ الشامتين بسيِّدٍ

    لهُ سلف في الأكرمينَ حسيبُ

    What would please the gloaters about a chief

    Who has noble ancestors as surety?

  4. أصيبَ بما لا نقصَ فيه بمجدهِ

    وفي مثله أيدي الخطوبِ تُصيبُ

    He was struck by that which does not detract his glory,

    For such are the blows fate's trials inflict.

  5. له حُسنُ صَبرٍ بالملمات ناهِض

    وعود على عَض الخُطوبِ صليبُ

    He has the merit of resilience in adversities,

    And the habit of rising above the blows of fate.

  6. وعين تَغاضى في الأمورِ على القذى

    وصدر بأسرارِ الهمومِ رحيبُ

    An eye overlooking specks in matters,

    And a chest spacious for the secrets of worries.

  7. وما هو إلا ماجد ذو حفيظةٍ

    مليءُ بتجريب الأمور لبيبُ

    He is but a glorious one, judicious,

    Full of experience in testing matters, rational.

  8. يُحامي على مجد العتيك ويتَّقي

    على الشرف الأزديّ وهو مهيبُ

    He protects the glory of Atiq1, and is wary

    Of the honorable Alzaidi2 lineage, and it is formidable.

  9. وهل يجد الحسَّادُ قولاً ليعرب

    سوي أن يقولوا إنه لكئيبُ

    What can the envious say but to express

    That he is sorrowful?

  10. نعم مثلُ من واري أبو العربِ اغتدى

    وراحَ له وسط القلوب وجيبُ

    Yes, like one who tended the Arabs' affairs was aggressive

    And whose heart roamed in chests and was amiable.

  11. ولا غرو ان يضحي ويمسي بمن مضى

    لدي كل دانٍ رنةٌ ونحيبُ

    It is no wonder that he grieves morning and eve for one who passed,

    At the abode of every cultivated person, there is ringing and weeping.

  12. فإن خامرتهُ لوعة فكأنها

    وإِن يكُ صبر عنده فعجيبُ

    If sorrow has perturbed him, it is as though

    It is new, and if he shows patience, it is wondrous.

  13. ويعلم أن اللهَ عند بلائه

    يجازي على الصَّبر الفتى ويُثيبُ

    He knows that Allah will reward him

    For his patience, requiting the youth.

  14. بني عمرٍ عشتم جميعاً وبُرِّئت

    من السوء أجسام لكم وقلوبُ

    O Clan of Umar3, you all lived, and were exonerated

    Of wrongdoing, your bodies and hearts pure.

  15. ولا زالَ غادٍ من غمام ورائح

    على من دفنتم بالعَرَاءِ يصوبُ

    Still, a cloud was passing by he who travels

    To those you buried in the bare land.
