1. يا للطّلول ويالها من أرُبعِ

    مَثلت لنا بيْنَ اللّوى فالأجْرَعِ

    O you tall statuesque beauty

    You appeared to us among the twisting sands

  2. عجباً نُجَدّد في عِراصِ رسومها

    عَهدَ الهوى ونُجُودَها بالأدمُعِ

    How strange we are renewed in following her traces

    The days of love and its generosity with tears

  3. ونقول ما فعل الجميع وأين لي

    ردُّ الجواب من الخَلاء البَلْقَعِ

    And we say what everyone did and where can I

    Get an answer in the empty wilderness

  4. عَهدي بها والدَّارُ جامعَةٌ لَنا

    زَمناً وشعب الحَيّ لم يتَصَدّعِ

    My pledge to her while the house gathered us

    For a time and the people of the district were not divided

  5. والأصْفياء من الأحبّة جيرةٌ

    يَغْنَون في المصْطَافِ والمُتَربَّعِ

    And the chaste, beloved neighbors

    Who sing in the summer-place and the square

  6. ولنا مسارحُ في مَلاعبِ للصّبى

    بيْنَ الجآذر والظَّباء الرتَّعِ

    And we have playgrounds for the boys

    Between the streams and the grazing gazelles

  7. من كل آنسة منعَّمة الشّوى

    تختال بين محبَّرٍ ومُوشعِ

    From every lovely doe, perfumed with passion

    Sashaying between embroidered cloth and glossy silk

  8. برزَتْ تثنّي في الدّلال كأنّما

    كُسيت مجاسِدُها غصونَ الخروعِ

    She came out, swaying coquettishly as if

    Her pillows were draped with tendrils of basil

  9. وبدت ترقرق في فرند شَبابِها

    كالشَّمس لائحةً أوان المطلعِ

    And she appeared, shimmering in the prime of her youth

    Like the rising sun or at daybreak

  10. ولها غدير كالحنادس تحتها

    قَمرٌ لعَشرٍ في الحساب وأربَعِ

    And she has a pond like the colored pebbles beneath her

    A moon for ten in counting but only four

  11. سرب الأنيس به غنَيْنا مَرّةً

    زَمن الحمى والسَّربٌ غير مُرَوّعِ

    A flock of friends with whom we were happy for a time

    In days of love before the flock was frightened

  12. ثم انقضى عهدُ الجميع وعهدنا

    لا غير أنا كالهيام النُّزّعِ

    Then the time of all passed including ours

    Except I remain like a helpless gazelle

  13. يَعتَادُنا حرُّ الصَّيانةِ كلَّما

    خطرتْ به الذِّكرى خلالَ الأضلعِ

    She is used to my passion whenever

    She crosses my mind through my ribs

  14. ويهيجنا شمُّ النسيم إذا جرى

    ويشوقنا شيمْ البُروق اللَّمعِ

    And the scent of the breeze awakens me when it blows

    And the lightning flashing excites me

  15. طال الولوعِ بذكر أيّام الصّبى

    عبثاً وهل في ردّها من مطمَعِ

    Longing for the days of youth was futile

    Is there any hope of their return?

  16. ولقد أرى لي في التعلُّل راحةً

    بتذكّر الماضي وإن لم يَرجعِ

    And I see comfort for myself in complaining

    By remembering the past even if it doesn't come back

  17. وأطيل شكوى حالتي وإخَالني

    في راحةٍ وغنىً ولَمّا أقنَعِ

    And I prolong complaining of my state and my solitude

    In comfort, wealth and satisfaction I did not attain

  18. كم غابط لي وهو دُونيَ في الغنى

    لو قسْتُ ما معهُ رَضيتُ بما مَعي

    How many poor compared to me in wealth

    If I counted what he has I wouldn't be satisfied with what I have

  19. أو ما كَفَاني غُصّتي وتمسّكي

    برضى أبي عبد الإله الأرْوَعِ

    Or if my misfortune and my insistence

    On the consent of my father, the most noble, didn't satisfy me

  20. حسْبي جوارُ محمّدٌ بن مُعمّرٍ

    ووقوع شعري منه أحسنَ موقعِ

    It's enough for me to be near Muhammad ibn Mu'ammar

    And that he accepts my poetry in the best way

  21. بسعَادة لإرادةٍ ووفادة

    وزيادة من عادة لم تقطعِ

    With good fortune, desire, and loyalty

    And excess of habit that did not cut off

  22. وهو الرَّبيع المستهلُّ غمامةُ

    غوثُ الأرامل واليتامى الجوّعِ

    He is the rain cloud of spring

    Succor of widows and hungry orphans

  23. والمطعم الأضياف طيَّبَ ماله

    زمن المحول غداة ريح زَعْزَعِ

    Who feeds guests with his good money

    After the years of drought and shaking winds

  24. وهو المطاول والُمنافس في العُلى

    ويَعُدٌّ أن لا نفْع إن لم يَنْفَعِ

    He is the tall one competing for supreme height

    Promising to be of no use if he does not benefit

  25. ويَخالُ أن المال حين يُضيعُه

    فيما يُفيدُ الحمدَ غيْرُ مُضيّعِ

    And he reckons that wealth, when he wastes it

    On what brings praise, is not squandered

  26. لمحمّد بن معمر عَمُرْت لنا

    سُبلُ المنافعِ في الطَّريق المهيعِ

    Muhammad ibn Mu'ammar, you lengthened

    The roads of benefits on the difficult path for us

  27. وإذا العُفاة شكت صروفَ زَمانها

    ورأت عليْها الرّزق غير مُوسَّعِ

    And when the destitute complained of the vicissitudes of time

    And saw sustenance scarce for them

  28. قصدت أبا عبد الإله فخيَّمت

    بفناء رَحبٍ الدَّار عَذب المشرَعِ

    They headed for Abu Abd Allah, so they camped

    In the spacious courtyard of the sweet-watered house

  29. يعطى بلا مَنٍّ نفائس ماله

    ويجودُ عفواً شيمة المتوَرّعِ

    He gives generously without holding back treasures

    And donates spontaneously, exemplifying self-restraint

  30. مُتفرد بالفضل لم أرَ مثلَهُ

    في فضلِه وبمثلِه لم أسمَعِ

    Unique in his excellence, I have not seen his like

    In his excellence, nor heard of his equal

  31. منها نُهىً وفصاحةٌ وسَماحةٌ

    وعزيمةٌ في الخَير لمَّا تُدْفعِ

    From him, prohibition and eloquence and generosity

    And resolve for good even when opposed

  32. وتَواضعٌ في فعْله ومَقالِه

    تبدو عليه دلائل المُتَوَرِّعِ

    And humility in his actions and speech

    The traits of reserve appear in him

  33. وإذا أتته نعْمة لم تُطغِه

    وإذا عرَتهُ مُلِّمةٌ لم يضْرَعِ

    And if a blessing comes to him, it does not make him haughty

    And if an affliction touches him, he does not wilt

  34. متحَمّل في حال كل كريهة

    متنبّه للحادث المتَوقّعِ

    Bearing patiently every repugnant situation

    Remaining vigilant of the expected events

  35. منعته همّتهُ الهجُوع فلَم ينَمْ

    وكذاكَ من طلَب العُلى لم يَهْجَعِ

    His resolve prevents him from weakness so he does not sleep

    Just as the seeker of high status does not slumber

  36. ولهُ معَالٍ في العَتيك وسؤدَدٌ

    في آل قَحطانَ المُلوك وتُبَّعِ

    And he has wealth in livestock and camels

    Among the kings of Qahtan and Tubba

  37. زيدت به الأَزْدُ افتخاراً واغتدَتْ

    مضَرٌ تنافس في أعزَّ سُمَيدَعِ

    He added glory to Azd and arrogance to Mudar

    Competing for the most noble lineage

  38. حسدت خؤولتُه العمومة إذ رأتْ

    أدنى الأقاربِ في المحلّ الأرْفعِ

    His in-laws envied him when they saw

    The lowest relative in the highest position

  39. ورأت فنونَ فضائلٍ وكارِم

    لمحمّد من مقْتَفىً أو مُتْبَعِ

    And they saw the diverse virtues and noble traits

    In Muhammad, whether followed or sought

  40. ومآثر نطقت بحمد محمَّدٌ

    في كل قطر كالخَطيب المُصَقّعِ

    And glorious deeds spoke in praise of Muhammad

    In every land like the eloquent orator

  41. أمحمّد بنَ مُعَمّرٍ أنت الَّذي

    أحيَيتَنا بحَيا الغُيوم الهُمَّعِ

    O Muhammad ibn Mu'ammar, you are the one who

    Revived us with the life of passionate clouds

  42. أنتَ المُبيحُ لنا مراعيَ أنعُمٍ

    آمالُنَا فيها سوارحُ ترْتعي

    You who provide for us pastures of bliss

    In which our hopes graze

  43. أنتَ الَّذي تضع الصّنيعة عنْدَنا

    بصَواب رأي الجُود أحسَن موضعِ

    You who properly place favor with us

    With the wisdom of your generous opinion

  44. أنتَ المحقّ إذا فخرت بسُؤدَدٍ

    وعلىً وغيْرُك يا محمّدُّ مُدَّعي

    You are right to take pride in noble lineage

    While others, O Muhammad, falsely claim

  45. ولكَ الثّناء الطّيبُ الحَسن الَّذي

    في الثّوابُ لمن يقول ومَن يعي

    And for you is goodly praise, beautifully given

    In reward for those who speak and listen

  46. عُمِّرتَ ياابن مُعَمر وبقيت في

    نعم بقاء النّاعم المُتَمَتّع

    You have lived long, O son of Mu'ammar, and remained

    In the blessings of comfortable life

  47. وبلغت عِزَّ سيادةٍ وسعادةٍ

    في سامعين من البَرّية طُوَّعِ

    And attained the glory of leadership and fortune

    Obeyed among people of the wilderness

  48. تعْلو على رتب المُلوك برتبةٍ

    تحتَلّ في شرَفٍ أشمَّ ممنَّعِ

    You rise above the ranks of kings with a rank

    That occupies the most honorable and inaccessible position

  49. فأليكَها أدبيَّةً عربيَّةً

    كسُمَّوط درٍّ بالنُّضارِ مُرَضّعِ

    So for you this literary ode in Arabic

    Like well-nursed pearls adorned with radiance
