1. إلا مُسعِدُ بالهوى من سعادِ

    فنأنَسَ بالقرب بعدَ البِعادِ

    None is happy in love but he who attains union after separation

    And finds sweetness after bitterness

  2. وتنساغ بلوى لمن نحن نهوى

    ونغنى وتروى قلوبُ صوادي

    Troubles become enjoyable for those we love

    Our hearts solaced, we sing joyfully

  3. ويلقى المعنَّى بها ما تمنَّى

    ويَبرد منّا غليل الفؤادِ

    Finding what we wished for from this love

    Cooling the burning anguish of our souls

  4. بحسن تلاقٍ وطيب عناقٍ

    وضم تراقٍ وشَمم هوادي

    With the beauty of reunion and goodness of embrace

    Pressed close and breathing in the scented air

  5. وتَمساح صدر وتلزام نحرٍ

    وترشاق ثغرِ عذابٍ بِرادِ

    Cheek meeting chest and waist held fast

    Lips curing the torment of cruel separation

  6. وتهصيرُ قدٍ وتخميشُ خدٍ

    يعلّ بنّدٍ ومسك وجادي

    Neck caressed, cheek stroked

    Delighting, perfumed with musk and generosity

  7. أَما غير بخل بميعاد وصل

    على طول مطل وتزويد زادِ

    Do not be stingy with fulfilling vows of reunion

    After long waiting and provisioning supplies

  8. دعا صائحُ البين ما بين قلبين

    وجْدَيْ محبين خافٍ وبادي

    The cry of the separated heart between two hearts

    Of ardent lovers, timid and alone

  9. هما باشتراك بلوعة شاكٍ

    ودمعة باكٍ طويل السِّهادِ

    Both alike sharing the agony of a complaining wound

    And tears of a weeper, long in vigil

  10. أُخيَّ تبابي تولّى شبابي

    فكيف التصابي وفيم التمادي

    My brother, youth has turned its back on me

    How can we be joined when extremes drive us apart

  11. حسانٌ حَداني عليها التّداني

    ولكنَ عداني الحجَى بالعَوَادي

    Beauty stirred me to profess devotion

    Yet separation in the wastelands spurned me

  12. فهل أنتَ صاحٍ ومُبدي صلاحٍ

    لتفنيد لاحٍ وتسديد هادي

    Can you advise, promoting accord

    Quenching discord’s flames, showing the way

  13. إذا القلبُ شاهدَ لهواً تماهد

    حتى تجاهدَ حقّ الجهادِ

    When the heart is witness to passionate love

    It will struggle with true effort

  14. أم الشوق داعٍ لحبّ رباعٍ

    ومرعى مراعٍ ووصل خِرادِ

    Or does longing call for the love of a meadow

    And a pasture of trysts and sweet fruits

  15. سقى الغيثُ علاً سجالاً وطّلا

    بنزوى محلاًّ لأهل الودادِ

    The rain has watered the high ground and hills

    Making a place for loving friends

  16. إذا ما السَميّ مَراها العشيُّ

    وجادَ الوليَّ غمامُ العهادِ

    When the evening beholder sees her

    The clouds weep, lovingly tending

  17. وهبّت صباهُ وحان اشتباه

    مراعي رُباهُ ومرعى الوِهادِ

    The breeze blows, confusion stirs

    Pastures it nurtures, places of affection

  18. كأَنْ كُّف كهلانَ جادَت بهتَّان

    جدواهُ فازدانَ خصبُ البلادِ

    As if the palms of two elders have generously opened

    Their glory enhanced, the lands fertile

  19. وحيد الزَّمان الأمير اليماني

    الصّحيح الضّمان صَلاح الفسادِ

    Unique in his time, the Emir of Yeman

    Of sound protection, rectifying corruption

  20. فتىً لا يزال لديه النَّوالُ

    وفيه الجمال وفعل السَّدادِ

    A youth of continuous favour and beauty

    Of good deeds and conduct

  21. ذكيُّ الجَنان جريُّ اللّسان

    سخيّ البنان بمثل الغوادي

    Wise, eloquent, generous as a downpour

    Lavish gifts overflowing to all the lands

  22. مواهب تمَّت وزادت وجمًّت

    وفاضت وعمّت جميع البلادِ

    Kahlan made him prosper, ennobling him

    And sincerity like Yamani leather

  23. واصبح كهلانُ ينميه نبهانُ

    والجدَّ قحطان فوق الشدادِ

    Even if want comes by night to men and horses

    They repel like a torrent in a valley's depths

  24. أو لو العوز في الليل بالرّجل والخيل

    يدفعن كالسّيل في بطن وادِ

    Prepare the slender, white-flanked camels for war

    And the fine steeds for the day of skirmish

  25. أعدّو صِعاداً وبيضاً حداداً

    وجُردا جياداً ليوم الطّرادِ

    Reward every obedient one with good

    And unleash all against the recalcitrant

  26. وحسنَ صَنيعٍ لكل مطيعٍ

    وشت جميعٍ لأهل العنّادِ

    He took the path of kings in his conduct

    Like a stallion's gallop, a wild onager's run

  27. جَرى في سلوك طريق الملوك

    كجري العتيك ومجرى هَدادِ

    He said what is beautiful and gave generously

    Reviving proper paths of guidance

  28. فقال الجميل وأعطى الجزيل

    وأَحيا السّبيل سبيل الرّشادِ

    He built great works and attained glory

    And praise from all assemblies

  29. وشاد البناءَ وجاز السّناء

    ونال الثناء لدى كل نادي

    With clear honour, sound actions

    Eloquent words, and generous nature

  30. بمجد صريح وفعل صحيحٍ

    ولفظ فصيح وطبع جوادِ

    O leader of Al-Azd in courtesy and glory

    Bounty and praise come to you

  31. فيا سيدَ الأزد بالعُرف والمجد

    والفضل والحمد بين الأيادِي

    O father of the lofty, the nights love you

    Benefiting the loyal, confounding the enemies

  32. ويابا المعالي حبتك الليالي

    بنفع الموالي وكبْت الأعادي

    Blessed is the Blessed One! Who can compare to you

    Or rival your utmost striving?

  33. تبارك باريك من ذا يباريك

    أمَّن يجاديك بالأجتهادِ

    If men covet your place, beholding your example

    They stand like ashes in the wind

  34. إذا القوم راموا محلك شاموا

    سَناك وقاموا مقامّ الرّمادِ

    So continue and proudly persist, of noble station

    As time is sworn to your increase

  35. فطاوِلْ وسَامِ شريفَ المقام

    حلفَ الدَّوام على الأزديادِ

    Live a thousand joyful years in prosperity

    In comfort and attaining all you wish

  36. وعشْ ألفَ عيدٍ بجدٍّ سعيدٍ

    وعيشٍ رغيد ونيل المرادِ

    And may your son Mohammed grow guided by you

    Benefiting from your wisdom

  37. وعاش محمّدُ ابنك يرشدُ

    منك ويسعد بالاستفادِ

    Maturing into a sensible, intelligent, and literary

    Forbearing, insightful youth

  38. وشب نجيباً ذكياً أديباً

    حليماً لبيباً بحسن اعتقادِ

    May he and his family live long, abounding in

    Delight, sublime in station

  39. ويحيى ويبقى طويلا ويلقى

    سروراً ويرقى رفيع العمادِ

    Safe from harm, well-nourished, while his enemies

    Are wretched and consumed by thorns

  40. يُعافي ويُغْذَى وشانيه يؤذي

    بسوءٍ ويُقذى بشوك القتادِ

    When verse sells at the market of disdain

  41. وهاك البديعَ أرى لي يضيعُ

    إذا الشعر بيعَ بسوق الكسادِ
