1. إذا ذُكرت يوما مكارمُ تُستبقى

    فإن مديح الشعر انفسها عِلقا

    When virtues are remembered, praise endures,

    For the praise of poetry is worthless chatter.

  2. وماكلُّ شعر كالّذي أنا قائل

    إلا إن خير الشعر ما ضمن الرّزقا

    No poem is like that which I recite,

    Except the best poem contains sustenance.

  3. فأَصدقه ما قيل في خير قومه

    وأَكرمهم فعلاً وأحسنهم خلقا

    The truest praises the best of his people,

    And most generously acts and is most noble.

  4. أبي حسن الأَزْدي ذهل وحبّذا

    فتى الأَزْد ذهل وهو سيّدهم حقا

    My father Abu Hassan Al-Azdi Zahel approves and blesses,

    The noblest of the Azd, Zahel, and he is truly their master.

  5. رئيس بني نبهان طُراً وكلهم

    ملوك بني الدّنيا عبيد لهم رقَّا

    The chief of the Bani Nabhan, most generous,

    Kings over people of the world, their slaves obeying them.

  6. بني عمر إن الإله بلطفه

    لكلٍ على أَيديكم بسطَ الرّزقا

    O Bani Umar through God's kindness,

    To each at your hands He gave ample sustenance.

  7. ملكتم جميع النّاس لمّا جعلتم

    لهم بالنّدى من رق حاجاتهم عنقا

    You ruled all people when you made

    Their delicate necks free of the yoke of need.

  8. فلم يجتدوا إلاّ بني عمر الغنى

    ولم يهتدوا إلا إلى سَمَدٍ طُرقا

    None gained wealth except through Bani Umar

    And none found paths but those leading to Samad.

  9. أَبا حسن يا ذهلُ أنت الذي لهُ

    محاسن غرّ تملأُ الغرب والشّرقا

    O Abu Hassan, o Zahel you who has

    Beauties that filled east and west.

  10. وأنتَ الّذي فقت الملوك سيادةً

    وطلتَهم فضلاً وفقتهم سَبقا

    You who surpassed kings in sovereignty

    And excelled them in merit and outpaced them.

  11. رقيت بيسر السعي في درج العلى

    إلى حيث لا يسطيع غيرك أن يرقى

    You ascended easily to the highest rank,

    Where none but you can climb.

  12. جِوارك يستكفى بعزّته الأَذَى

    وبرقُ محياكَ الحيا منه يُستسقى

    Your noble company alone averts harm,

    And the radiance of your face revives the living.

  13. بقيتَ لحفظ المُكرمات وحوزها

    فإن بقاء المكرمات بأَن تبقى

    You remain to guard honours and possess them,

    For honours endure only through endurance.

  14. وعاش بنوك الذَّهر ياذهل عيشة

    عسرك لا تشجى لديها ولا تشقى

    And may your descendants live, o Zahel, a life

    Free of hardship or misery.
