1. سَقياً لعهد الصّبا باللّذة انصرما

    ومَرحباً بزمان الشيّب مُغتنمَا

    The days of youth with pleasure have passed,

    And welcome the time of gray hair well spent,

  2. كنّا نرى الشّيب مكروهاً نحاذرهُ

    فاليوم حاجاتنا أن نبْلغَ الهَرَما

    We saw gray hair as hated to avoid,

    Yet now we wish to attain old age,

  3. لعلّنا نتلافى فارطاًذهبت

    به اللّيالي وأبقت عندنا النّدما

    Perhaps we can make up for times gone by,

    When nights took away and left us with regret,

  4. فالحمد لله صار الشيّب يخدمنا

    بالموعظات وكنّا للصِّبا خدمَا

    So praise be to God gray hair now serves us,

    With advice though we served youth as servants,

  5. فاستشعر الصّبر سراً أو علانيةً

    سلامة الدّين تحت الصّبر ماسَلمَا

    So feel patience secretly or openly,

    Safety of religion under patience is protected,

  6. ولن تَرى شهوات المرء غالبةً

    لدينه ماغدا بالصّبر معتصمَا

    You'll never see man's desires defeating,

    His religion if with patience he remains steadfast,

  7. وفاسد السّر قد يُبدي النّفاق كمَا

    يبدي عليك خُفيُّ العلّةالسَّقَما

    The corrupt at heart may show hypocrisy,

  8. إن المرادَ لما أظهرتُ من عظةٍ

    والزَّجر ألزم لي لو كنت ملتَزمَا

    As illness shows when hidden comes to light,

    What I have shown of advice and deterring,

  9. يا قلبُ مالك ميالاً إلى شُبهِ من

    الهَوى ربما ناطت بهِ التّهمَا

    Is binding for me if I remain committed,

    O heart why do you incline towards passions,

  10. أراك تصبو إلى المستطرفات وأن

    تُواصلَ الفتيات الخرّد الوشُمَا

    Perhaps tied down by suspicions and blame?

    I see you aspire to trifles and to,

  11. من كل داعية لِللَهو مائِلَةٍ

    أذنيك بالحبّ عن نَهي النُّهى صَمَما

    Keep company with flirtatious coquettes,

    Lending an ear to each temptation,

  12. حسناء كالصّنَم استحسنت منك لَها

    على تقاك هوى من يعبد الصّنما

    Deaf to restraint the ears to love enthralled,

    A beauty like an idol you admired,

  13. هيهاتَ لا غير أن اللّهوَ مُعتَرضٌ

    لنا أمانيَّ أو ذكرُ الصِّبا لَمَمَا

    Passionately though forbidden the worship of idols,

    Alas! Only distraction opposes us,

  14. لا تنكرنّ على شيخ تِعِلّتُهُ

    وربما عجبَ المحزون فابتَسَما

    Hopes or memories of youth frolic and play,

    Do not deny an old man his delusions,

  15. هي التّعلاّت والعلات مانعةٌ

    كما يبطل حقٌّ اليقظة الحُلَما

    The sad may surprise you and give a smile,

    These are delusions that ailments prevent,

  16. قل للظباءِ ارتْعي ماشئتِ آمنةً

    فقد حُرمت وحلَّ الصّائد الحَرما

    As truth negates dreams during wakefulness,

    Say to the deer graze safely without fear,

  17. وقد تجدّد لي ذكرى ملاعبنا

    فَما أحس لأيّامالصّبا قِدَما

    For the hunter is forbidden the sanctuary inviolate,

    Memories of our playgrounds are renewed,

  18. وانثني وشؤون العين حافلَةٌ

    بالدّمع لولا جميل الصّبر لانسجَما

    No more sensing the days of my youth,

    I pour forth with concerns filling my eyes,

  19. ولي مآرب منها ماصبرت على

    مكتومه وزجَرت النّفسَ فانحسَما

    With tears but for patience nothing composed,

    I have intentions hidden have patience,

  20. أمَّا القريض فقالوا لا نري لكَ أن

    تخفى البيان ولا أن تنبذ الحكمَا

    And chastised my soul so decisively resolved,

    As for poetry they say do not hide,

  21. وجاشَ فكري بأبياتٍ شكرتُ بها

    للهِ في شكر مُسديها لي النِّعمَا

    Eloquence nor reject wisdom and judgments,

    My thoughts surged with verses thanking,

  22. وإنَ جود بني نبهان نبَهَني

    حتّى نطقتُ بدرّ الحكمة الكَلَما

    God for giving me blessings and bounty,

    The generosity of Bani Nabhan has alerted me,

  23. هذا أبو القاسم القسّامُ نائِلَهُ

    فينا وقرّ لنا من مدحنا القَسَما

    To utter wisdom's pearls and fine speech,

    This is Abul Qasim the judicious,

  24. ألقى عليَّ عليٌّ ثوبَ موهبةٍ

    فصغت من ذّهب شكري لهُ عَلَمَا

    Among us he won and gave freely his dues,

    Ali has honored me with a gift,

  25. إن الإساءة والإحسان شأنهما

    أن يُفصحا ويُبينا العَيَّ والبَكَما

    So my gold gratitude for him is flagged,

    Good and bad their nature's to reveal,

  26. ومن غدا الذَمُّ والاثمُ اللّذان هما

    حَظّاه من ماله اخترنا له العَدمَا

    And clarify the defects and the perfections,

    Tomorrow's blame and sins which are,

  27. حاشا أبي القاسم السّامي إلى عُمَرٍ

    والوارثِ المجد عن قحطان والكَرَما

    His fortune from wealth we chose oblivion,

    Far from Abul Qasim the sublime,

  28. مهذّب قدَّر الله المضاءَ له

    والعزم والحزمَ والإقدام والهِممَا

    Who inherited glory from Qahtan of grace,

    God gave him resolve, determination and courage,

  29. سمَا فأبداَ في حسن الثناء يداً

    منه وقدَّم في بيت العُلى قدَمَا

    And ambitions lofty that ascend to the sky,

    Nobles of Bani Nabhan vanquishers,

  30. وعوّد النَّفس أفعالاً ومكرمةً

    سماحة ولقد صارت له عَلمَا

    With might and glory heroes of great valor,

    Azdi horsemen their steeds never censured,

  31. فليتقَ في نعمةٍ محروسةٍ وعُلَى

    مأنوسةٍ تتبع الأَموال والحشَما

    On days of pride nor their swords blunted,

    So Atiq exalted by God their rule,

  32. ومنعه ويسار يبلغان به

    من المراتب والعلياء حيث سَمَا

    Scaled the pinnacle of nobility and summits,

    Clarified the paths of righteousness to tread,

  33. وسادة من بني نبهان قاهرة

    بالبأس والعزّة الأَبطالَ والبُهمَا

    And taught the virtuous habit of doing good,

    From the heights of glory the generosity of,

  34. أَزديةٌ لم تكن أَجيادُها عُطلا

    يومَ الفخار ولا أسبابها رِممَا

    Abi Alma'mar among them reigned supreme,

    So I clarified for Qahtan their merit,

  35. كذا العتيك أعزَّ الله ملكَهمُ

    حَلّوا من الشّرف الأَرعان والقممَا

    Whoever claims otherwise has wronged,

    The discerning have insight to distinguish,

  36. وأَوضحوا سبل الحسنى لسالكها

    وعَلّموا عادة الإحسان من فَهما

    With wisdom the lights from the darkness,

    Glory of ancients like a building if,

  37. من طَاول المجد كانت مكرمات بَني

    أبي المعمّر فيما بينهم حكَما

    Later hands fall short of maintaining will collapse,

    This is Abul Hasan accustomed to virtue,

  38. فبينت لبني قحطان فضلهمُ

    ومن تطاول بالدّعوى فقد ظَلَما

    So cite him as an example and take oath by him,

    And boast of the master of Qahtan and his son,

  39. وللبصائر أبصارٌ مميّزةٌ

    برشدها تعرفُ الأنوار والظلما

    With the excellence of his deeds and kindness,

    Notice the glow of glory radiating,

  40. مجد الأَوائل كالبنيان إن قصرت

    أَيدي الأَواخر عن إصلاحه انهدَما

    On his cheeks' brocade and his sweet scent of musk,

    Fair mannered, safeguarded from blights,

  41. هذا أبو الحسن اعتدّت مكارمُهُ

    فاضرب بها مثلاً واعقدْ بها قسَما

    Gives freely when pleased, forgives when angry,

    Generous when he starts an act of kindness,

  42. وافخرْ بسيّد قحطانٍ وباهِ به

    في فضل ماسنّ واستحسان مارَسَما

    Willing when resolving upon good consents,

    He gives abundantly and gracefully,

  43. طلق ترى لالآَ البهاء منه على

    ديباج خدّيه في عرنينه شَمَما

    We never knew him to reproach or tire,

    Believe me Ali is above kings,

  44. حلُو الشّمائل مأمون الغوائلِ إنْ

    رَضيت جادَ وإن أسخطته حَلِما

    And false who claims the contrary,

    Testify he's the most trusted,

  45. سَمحٌ إذا بدأَ المعروف عادَ به

    نَدْبٌ إذا همَّ بالأَمر الرّضى عَزَما

    Most virtuous, most faithful to his word,

    A master whose kindness his eminence confirmed,

  46. يُعطى الجزيلَ هنيئاً في مآثرِه

    فَما عرفنا لهُ مَنّاً ولا سأما

    And compelled Arab and foreigner to acknowledge,

    You, my master, ordained the Azdi lineage,

  47. صَدِّق عليَّاً على أنَّ العلاء لهُ

    فوق الملوك وكذب زعمَ من زعمَا

    By your royal decree the pen has inscribed,

    I praise him with what none can deny,

  48. واشهدْ له أنّه أكفاهمُ ثقةً

    أصفاهمُ خُلُقاً أَوفاهمُ ذِمَما

    As if man knows what he knows,

    Convey to Abul Hasan what hopes,

  49. وسَيدٌ ثبّت افحسانُ سؤدَدَهُ

    وألزَم العَرب الإقرار والعجَما

    Prolonged or mighty, we constantly pursue,

  50. واحرز الشرفَ الأَزديَّ قدَّرهُ

    حكمُك المليك الّذي أجرى به القلَما

    May your house remain inhabited and frequented,

    By pilgrims safely traveling and hosted,

  51. نثني عليه بما لم يخف عن أحد

    كأنما يعلم الإنسان ماعلما

    Welcome the fast with zeal,

    And the feast, Eid and sacred months,

  52. أبلغ أبا الحسن الّلاتي نحاولها

    من الأَماني فيما طالَ أَو عظما

    Like pearls beaded with strung rubies.

  53. ودام بيتك معموراً ومعتمَراً

    للحاج في السّلم محجوجاً ومستلمَا

  54. واستقبل الصّومَ بالإقبال منتهجاً

    والفطر والعيد ثم الأَشهر الحرما

  55. وهاكها من بديع الحسن محكمة

    كالدّر فصِّل بالياقوت منتظما
