آبَ الظّلامُ بأذكارٍ وتشويقِ

لمُسْتَهامٍ بطيفِ الشّوق مَطْروقِ

The darkness cried with invocations and excitements

For one who is inspired by the phantom of passion set aflame

وطالَ ليلُ المعنّى حين خامَرَهُ

ساري الهمُوم بتعذيبٍ وتأريقِ

And the night of meaning was prolonged when it was stirred

By the master of sorrows with torment and wakefulness

ليل أَقام على ذي صَبوة كلفٍ

ومعلق للهوى بالبين معلوقِ

A night that stood over one endowed with glory and honor

And hung by passion amidst separation suspended

كفى جوىً وأسىً أَنّا أَقام لنا

عشق الهوى ففشا في كل معشوقِ

It is enough of agony and grief that passion for love raised for us

Its banner spreading in every beloved

وعيَّث الدّهرفي تفريق ألفتنا

والدّهر صاحب تأليف وتفريقِ

And time busied itself with parting our fellowship

And time is a master of gathering and dividing

وخان كلُّ صفيٍ من أحبّتنا

ومن يدوم لعهدٍ أَو مواثيقِ

And every loyal companion of our loved ones betrayed

And who adheres to a covenant or pacts?

قلَّ الوفاءُ وقد أَصبحتُ معشقاً

منالودادبمصنوع ومَمْذوقِ

Loyalty diminished and I became a lover

With affection manufactured and tasted

وكيف ينساغُ في عيشِ الزّمان بمن

يكادُ يشْرَقُ حلقي منه بالرّيقِ

And how can life in times go down easily in one

Who almost chokes me with saliva from it?

لا غير ما الله قاضٍ من رفاهية

أو شدة فاقنعي يانفسُ أَو توقي

There is none but what God decreed of prosperity

Or adversity so be content my soul or abstain

أَو اذكري عهدَنا والشمل ملتئِمُ

والعيشُ صافٍ ولم يُمزج بتَرْنيقِ

Or recall our covenant and fellowship combined

And living purely not mixed with misery

ياربّ دَسكرة وافيتها سحراً

بكوكب أَهتديها أَو بعَيّوقِ

My Lord spent the night intoxicated

With a star I was guided by or a meteor

لما غدا الدّيكُ في علياء مشرفةٍ

يحثُّنا يزميرٍ بعدَ تصفيقِ

When the rooster came on high grounds

Exciting us with melody after applause

نبّهت كل ظريف طيّب غزلٍ

بالّلهو والخمر مصبوح ومغبوقِ

I alerted every gentle refined flirtation

With play and wine in the morning baked and brewed

وقلت يا صاحبَ الحانوتِ كيف لنا

بعانسٍ بليتْ من طول تعتيقِ

And I said: “O owner of the tavern, what about us

With a spinster who long aged from the barrels?”

إن عزّت الخمر منهيتٍ فهات لنا

ما استُلَّ من مستلْ أو سيقَ من سيقِ

If wine is prohibited then bring us

Whatever is extracted from a press or poured from a pitcher

وأحْينا بسلاف السّالفين بدَت

صفراء ذاتَ بريق في الأباريقِ

And we revived the traditions of predecessors which appeared

Golden-yellow, gleaming in jugs

فجاءيسعى بها تحت الرّواق لَها

ضوءٌ يَروق الحميّا وسط راووقِ

So he came rushing with it below the portico for it

A light pleasing the protective amidst the filled cups

عرفت ذلك بالريعان مغتذياً

بدرِّ ثدي صِباً بالّلهو مملُوقِ

I recognized that by the trellises, thriving

On the full moons of youthful bosoms in play suspended

ثم اعترضت لها باللّهو عند هوىً

مني فقلت لها بيني بتطليقِ

Then I intercepted her in playfulness upon a passion

From me so I said to her unambiguously

وقد أقول إِذا هبّت يمانيةٌ

بصادق الوَدْق وكّافِ الأفاريقِ

And I may say when a southerly wind blows

With the sincerity of intimacy and the “Q” of the quilts

ياغيثُ فاسكب حَياء في منازلنا

من ذات جَوسٍ إلى ذاتِ الأباريقِ

“O rain pour restrain in our dwellings

From an affectionate essence to essence of jugs

فلن تُضاهي علياً في السّماح ولو

أقمت فيها بالحاح وتطبيقِ

For you will not equal Ali in generosity even if

You insisted with imploring and exertion

جدوى عليّ غوادٍ أو روائحُ في

برّ وبحر وتغريبٍ وتشريقِ

Of benefit to me are yearnings or aromas in

Land, sea, exile and return

وخضرم تردُ الآمالُ ساحلَه

لو رامت اللجَّ أدناها لتغريقِ

And gray are the hopes on his coast

Even if the floods attempt to submerge beneath

عاش الأنام بجدواه وعَمّهمُ

من الأيادي بتقليدٍ وتطويقِ

People lived by his generous acts and he covered them

With hands in imitation and siege

أنظرْ إلى كل ذي نفسٍفلست تَرى

غير امرئٍ من ندى كفيه مرزوقِ

Look to any living being and you will not see

Except one provided by the dew of his palms

لم يخصص الناس من بدوٍ ومن حضرٍ

بل عمَّ من حيوان كل مخلوقِ

He did not specify people between nomads and urban

Rather he covered every human and beast

أولى بَبو القاسم النُّعمى وقَسّمَهَا

في النّاس ما بين مَقليٍّ ومومَوقِ

Blessed is Abu Al-Qasim who distributed the bounties

Among people between enabled and disabled

يرعَون من كلاءٍ في عز ملتجاٍ

كأنَّه روضة نيطت إلى نيقِ

They pasture of his sufficient legacy in mighty elevation

As if it is a meadow tied to a peg

لدى جناب الجَواد المستجار به

معطى المياسير فتّاحِ المغاليقِ

At the side of the generous one in whom we seek refuge

The bestower of flowing waters, opener of latches

ابقى على عرضه صوناً وتوقيةً

ما عارَض المال من بذّل وتمزيقِ

Remain on his honor protecting and securing

What possessions confronted from extravagance and tearing

موفقلجميعالخير يفعله

لم يُثنَ عن فعل معروف بتعويقِ

Succeeding in every good he does

Undeterred from doing good by discouragement

مقدّم بقديم المجد في كرمٍ

إلى بلوغ المعالي غير مسبوقِ

Advanced with ancient glory in generosity

To achieving the heights unprecedented

زاكي الأروم كريم الفرع من يمنٍ

ومن بني عمرَ الصّيدِ الغرانيقِ

Of pure lineage, generous scion from Yemen

And from the lions of Omar, the hunters’ aid

من آل نبهان سادات العتيك لهم

أرث الملوك من الأزد البَطَاريقِ

Of the Nabhan family, the lords of Atik, for them is

The inheritance of kings from Al-Azda the renowned

هم الأعزة يرجون الحمى أُنُفا

ويشربون بصاف غير مطروقِ

They are the most glorious seeking sanctuary

And drinking from pure utensils unpierced

وينهدون جميعاً واثبين على

خيل قنابلَ جُرَداً أو برازيقِ

And they moan altogether springing atop

Stallions of crosses and steeds

قبٌّ سلاهب تعدو بالليوث على

مثل الصُّقُور إذا انقضَّت من الضيقِ

Purebred horses galloping with the lions

Like falcons when swooping from confinement

قتل الكماة وعَقر الكوم قد جَعلا

سيوفهم علفاً للهام والسُّوقِ

They killed the brave warriors and hamstrung the valorous

Making their swords fodder for worries and markets

ويا أبا القاسم النّدبِ المهذّبِ يا

مَن هو فيكل فضل غير مَلحوقِ

And O Abu Al-Qasim the refined elegist, O you

Who has every virtue inimitably performed

ومَن إذا طالتِ الأقوال كان لهُ

فصلُ الخطاب وأعيا كلّ منطقِ

And who, when praises are prolonged, has

The final word and surpasses every orator

ومَن إذا اشتدت البلوى تقول لهُ

يا فارجَ الكرب بل ياموسع الضيقِ

And who, when tribulations intensify, you say to him

“O reliever of distress, rather O expander of confinement”

ومَن إذا عزَّ مطلوبٌ وكان لهُ

وجه لديه رجوناه بتحقيقِ

And who, when an objective is difficult and for him is

A position we hope for from him to accomplish

أُثني عليك بمهما شئتَ من حسن

فإن عند جميع النّاس تصديقي

I praise you for whatever good you wish for indeed

All people confirm my testification

ومن صفاتك نطري كلَّ ممتدحٍ

بمستعار ومن حسناك مسروقِ

And of your traits I cast every laudation

With figurative language and of your beauty stolen

وأنت يامنله فرع تمكن في

بحبوحة الحسب الزّاكي بتعريقِ

While you, O one whose scion is enabled in

The good company of pure lineage through lineage

حللت بين ملوك الأرض موضعَ ما

تحلَّ بين لحاظ العين والموقِ

You have excelled between the kings of earth in the position of what

Does not excel between glimpses of the eye and the winking

فزادك الله فيهم يا عليُّ عُلىً

يوفي على الشرف العالي بتحقيقِ

So may God increase you O Ali in superiority

Fulfilling the high honor in accomplishment

واعتادك العيد بالعيش الّرغيد على

سعد وامنٍ واقبال وتوفيقِ

And make you accustomed to prosperous living happily with

Fortune, security, success and empowerment

وهاكها من ذكي الفهم أحكمها

من البديع بإعرابٍ وتدقيقِ

And here they are from the keenest of mind, I concluded them

With eloquence and precise delivery
