1. ألِبارقِ متألق الأيماضِ

    وهنا يَعرق الساعِد النّباضِ

    O lightning, brilliant flashes

    You have sparkled with tears of remorse

  2. رَقْرَقتَ من ماء المَدامع عَبرَةً

    منعت جفونك لذَّة الإغْماضِ

    Your eyelids prevented the bliss of slumber

    The visiting specter passed you by, weakening you

  3. وسرى لك الطَّيف المعاود موهناً

    بجوًى أمَضَّك أيّما إمْضاضِ

    With yearning that consumed you utterly

    When you remembered friends in passion

  4. لما ذكرت من الأحبة بالحمى

    رشفات عيش في هوًى وتراضي

    Moments of delight in love and harmony

    The friends were determined to part, never diverting

  5. عزم الأحبّة فرقة لم تنصرف

    عنْها وأنت لبعض حاجك قاضي

    From it while you arbitrated someone’s need

    My soul is ransom for the slanderers at morn

  6. نفْسي فداء الظاعنين غدّية

    واليَعْمُلات تُشدُّ بالأحفاضِ

    And the camel mares bound with ropes

    Lovely ones I grew up with, passionately

  7. وأوانس خرُد بإحكام الهوى

    حتفاً على مهج الرّجال قواضي

    Dying heroically on the chests of men, arbiters

    Note them through the veils with eager eyes

  8. لاحظن من خلَل الستور بأعين

    دُعج كحيلات العيون مراضِ

    Like kohl of eyes, sickly

    And casting from the corner of eyes that made our hearts

  9. ورمين عن حدق جعلن قلوبنا

    لنصال أسهمهنَّ كالأغراضِ

    For their glances like targets

    Displaying their innocence to us, but when they rejected us

  10. بيض عرضن لنا فلما صدننا

    بجمالهن رمين بالإعْراضِ

    With their beauty, they cast us off

    Though the fair ones unite, you will never see

  11. إن الحسان وإن وصلن فلن تَرى

    في ودهن سَجيَّةَ الأمحاضِ

    In their love the quality of sincerity

    And how can one who is parted find love

  12. ومتى يصحّ له من البيض الهَوى

    مَن في مفارقه سُطور بياضِ

    In the fair whose traces are like a white page

    Though old age shows its wisdom to you

  13. إن المشيب وإن بدا لك حلْمَهُ

    لَبهاء ريعان الشَبيبةِ ناضي

    The prime of youth is forgotten

    And death is more soothing to the wealthy than living

  14. والموتُ أروح للغني من عيشهِ

    في الحيّ بين الشّيب والأبغاضِ

    Among the living with old age and hatreds

    What holds back the ally of the home of poverty from

  15. ماذا يعوق حليفَ دار الفقر عن

    سُبُل طوالٍ في البلاد عراضِ

    The long roads in the desolate lands

    When the flames are kindled and the sparks increase

  16. إني إذا ذكت الهَواجرُ والتظت

    نارُ الصّياهدَ في الحَصَى الرَضراضِ

    In the crashing stones heated red

    I went farther than the heroes with characteristics

  17. جاوزتُ أجواز الفَلا بِرَواسِمٍ

    مثل القسيّ أو أراكٍ وغواضي

    Like the strong, the bright, the valiant

    The vile follows them with lowered gaze

  18. ذُلَلٌ بَراهُنَّ الوجيفُ على السُّرى

    حوصُ العيون حوائل الأعراضِ

    And averted eyes full of disapproval

    They carry the burdens of praise as fuel

  19. يحملن أثقال الثناء قواصداّ

    يطلُبْن لي منه رضى المعتاضِ

    Seeking my satisfaction from it

    And when they reach Abu Al-Hussein they pasture around me

  20. فإذا بلغن أبا الحسين رتعن بي

    في أمرعِ وشرعن وسط حياضِ

    In a meadow amidst enclosures

    They make the hands of the destitute wealthy

  21. فأَفدن أيدي المعسرين مياسرا

    وأعدن أسنمةً على الأنقاضِ

    And return to the ruins to rebuild

    A rain when our hopes are barren

  22. غيث إذا ما أجدبت آمالنا

    يممنه فرتعن بين رياضِ

    They drive it to pasture between gardens

    Generosity, courage, dignity and glory

  23. تغدو السمّاحةُ والبسالةُ والحجَى

    والمجد حشو قميصه الفَضْفاضِ

    Fill his flowing robe

    Then he is clothed in wisdom and armored with prohibition

  24. ثم ارتدى بالحلم وادّرَع النّهى

    مغضٍ عن الجهال أو متغاضي

    Indifferent to the ignorant or overlooking

    You have beautified, Abu Hassan, the traits of a youth

  25. حسنت أبا حسن صفاتك من فتىً

    لصعاب غاياتِ العُلى رَوّاضِ

    Keen to attain the highest goals

    Every great feat has been shouldered

  26. ولعْبٌ كلّ عظيمة متحمّل

    ولبحر كل كريهة خوّاضٍ

    And the ocean plowed by every despised diver

    You have risen above the towering heights with resolve

  27. ولقد علوت الباذخات بهمَّة

    ومضاء رأي مُبرَم نهّاضِ

    And the brilliant judgment of a determined shining light

    You took on the duty of supporting the exalted

  28. ولقد نهضتَ بنهض أروع فاتك

    نَدبٍ بإعباء العُلي بهّاضِ

    A successor to the excellent predecessors

    You are capable of every virtue

  29. آت لكل فضيلةٍ متناول

    آبٍ لكل رذيلة رفّاضِ

    And abstaining from every baseness

    You walked in benevolence like a glorious predecessor

  30. وسلكت في المعروف سيرة ماجد

    جارً على سنن الأوائل ماضي

    Following the ways of early times

    And you have spread in earning virtues a comfort

  31. وبسطتَ في كسب المكارم راحة

    كالبحر يقذف بالجدي الفياضِ

    Like the sea casting its overflowing fullness

    Continuing thereby to satisfy desires

  32. مازال بذلكَ للْرَغائِبُ آسياً

    لجراح نابِ اللَّزبة العَضّاضِ

    And heal the wounds of calamity, the biting

    The beauty of your reputation still undertakes

  33. وجميلُ عُرفك لم يزل مُتكفَّلاً

    جبراً لعظم الغيرة المُنْهاضٍ

    To compensate for the greatest misfortune

    Your stature prevented you from an act

  34. جنتب شأنك أن تشينك خطِّة

    وحميت عرضك وصمةَ الأعراضِ

    That would dishonor you and brand as tainted

    Omar bin Nabhan built for you

  35. ولقد بني عمر بن نبهان لكم

    بنيانَ عزٍ ليس بالمنقاضِ

    A foundation of might that cannot be toppled

    So greet and live undertaking our needs

  36. فاسلم وعشْ متكفلاً حاجاتِنا

    أنت الشفيع وجودك المتقاضيِ

    You are the intercessor, your benevolence the judge

    And may God decree your pleasure with me

  37. وقضى الإله رضاك عنّي أنَّني

    ياذهل عنك بحسن برَّك راضي

    For in your kindness I am pleased and appeased

    To you it is like an exquisite bride

  38. وإليكهَا مثلَ العروس بديعةً

    فيها شفاءُ الهمّ والأمراضِ

    In whom is the cure for care and sickness

    It crossed the mind of moral wisdom

  39. خطرت بها حِكَمُ النَّهى في خاطرٍ

    متوقدٍ كالحية النَّضاضِ

    Kindled like glowing embers

    God reward the two poets, for they

  40. الله دَرُّ الشاعرَين فإنّهم

    بانوا العُلى وَصياقل الأعْراضِ

    Represented the exalted and burnished reputations

    Poetry is the best preaching cautioning against

  41. والشعرُ أوعظُ زاجرٍ عن سُبَّة

    وعلى المكارم خيرُ ما حَضَّاضِ

    Vileness and encouraging virtues
