1. خطرَتْ ببالك ليتَها لم تخطرِ

    أَنّى ذكرتَ ولاتَ حين تَذكُّرِ

    The thought crossed your mind, if only it had not

    When you remembered our past upon remembrance

  2. كَلَّفٌ على كبَرٍ ضلال مُكابرٍ

    روق الصّبابة من صباه تعَبّرُ

    An old man insistent on his ways of ignorance

    The spirit of youth passes from his youth

  3. وله فنونٌ في الشجون ترى لهُ

    نَفَسَ الحريق ورقةَ المستَعْبِرِ

    Yet he has talents for love when you see

    A burning passion and kindling fervor

  4. ورخيمة الأَطراف تُجنى عندها

    ثمر المُنى من لحظ طَرفٍ أَحْوَرِ

    The softness of limb, plucking its fruit

    The wish fulfilled from a captivating glance

  5. قَمَر على غصن رطيب ينثني

    في الوَشي بين مُفَوّف ومُحَبَّرِ

    A moon on a moist branch bending

    In the darkness between perfumed and ambergris

  6. نظرتُ على حَذر الرَّقيب تَخالُساً

    فكأنّما نظرتُ بعينيْ جُؤذَرِ

    I looked furtively, wary of the watcher

    As if I looked with eyes of precaution

  7. وتبسّمَت فأرتك برق لهاتها

    في واضح كالأُقحوان مؤشَّرِ

    And you smiled, radiating a spark from that

    In the clear dawn like a foretelling sign

  8. نعمَ الضّجيعُ وقد وَجدت معَرّساً

    مِنها خلالَ مخلْخَل ومُسَوَّرِ

    What a fine companion I found decorated

    With her through an openwork screen

  9. فهصرت غصنا أو عصرت سلافةً

    من ظلمَ أشنبَ في نبات منوّرِ

    I became a branch to bend or pressed a drink

    Through injustice that flourished in fertile growth

  10. وأخِلَّةٍ كأهلّة قد أحرزوا

    كرم النفوس إلى بهاءِ المنظرِ

    Chaste ones like brides who have attained

    The vine of nobility in beautiful appearance

  11. ركبوا مطيّاتِ السرور يحثها

    نغمُ القيان على اصطخاب المزهرِ

    They rode the steeds of joy, driving them

    With the song of the lute to stir the blossoms

  12. نازعتهم في الصبح كاسَ سلافة

    سَلفة بعانَة سالفات الأعصرِ

    At dawn, I competed with them for a drink

    A vintage of hardships from past ages

  13. فكأنّما بعد المزاج حبابها

    فلق اللآلي في عقيق اصفرِ

    It was as if after being mixed, its bubbles

    Were pearls split in yellow agate

  14. في روضة أنُفٍ أَناف بجوّها

    أبكار غيث دَرَّ كلَّ مُبَكِّرِ

    In a garden of springs, springs with its air

    First rain whose drops all hastened

  15. نسجَت لها خُضرَ الحرير وَنظمت

    فيها قلائدَ من صُنوف الجوهرِ

    It wove for them the green silk and strung

    Necklaces of all kinds of jewels

  16. بين الشقائقِ والبَهار ونَرجسٍ

    والوَردِ والمنثورِ والنَّيْلوفَرِ

    Among anemones, basil, narcissus

    Roses, henna and jasmine

  17. فكأنّما تَهدي لنا نفسُ الصَّبا

    أرجَ القرنفل أو نسيمَ العَنبرِ

    As if the dawn itself gifts us

    The scent of carnation or a breeze of amber

  18. وكأنّ بهجتها وطيبَ نسيمها

    حُسنى محمَّدٍ الأغرِّ الأزْهرِ

    As if its splendor and the fragrance of its breeze

    Were my beloved Muhammed the most fragrant and brilliant

  19. الماجد العلم الذي جُمعت له

    شيمُ السّماح إلى كريم العُنصُرِ

    The glorious scholar whom were collected for him

    The noble traits and generous lineage

  20. قَسماً بوفد البيت باتوا عُزّماً

    للحجّ بين مُهلّلٍ ومُكَبرِ

    By the pilgrimage of the House they came determined

    For Hajj among praising and declaring God's greatness

  21. وغدا غَداة مِنىً سلوكا بعدما

    خسرت منون الشّمس بطن محسَّرِ

    And tomorrow they will go at dawn to Mina after

    The sun loses its brightness enveloped in gold

  22. وتعمّدوا التعريفَ ثم إفاضةً

    واستشعروا الأحبابَ عند المشعرِ

    They made their intention, then performed the stoning

    And sensed the beloved at the place of ritual

  23. وأتَوا مِنىً فرموا وقضَوا نسكَهم

    بالذَّبح بين مُحلّق ومُقَصِّرِ

    They came to Mina, casting and completing their ritual

    With sacrifice between shaving and shortening

  24. إن المكارم والفضائلَ والعلى

    لمعمّر ومحمّد بن مُعَمّرِ

    Indeed the generous deeds and virtues and nobility

    Are for Muammar and Muhammad son of Muammar

  25. علمان يغدو الدّست من نورَيهما

    يختال بين عُطاردٍ والمشْتَري

    Two scholars whose hands radiate with their light

    Wandering between Mercury and Jupiter

  26. من آل نبهان الذين كأنّهم

    مُزْنٌ سواكبُ أو غواربُ أبْحُرِ

    Of the Nubahan clan, who are like

    A necklace of stars or ships sailing the seas

  27. وإذا سألتَهمُ النّوال وجدتهم

    سُمُحاً بجَزل النائل المسْتَبْشرِ

    When you ask them for bounty you will find them

    Generous bestowers to the hopeful seeker

  28. يتهلّلوا بشراً كأنَّ وجوهَهم

    أَقمار تمٍّ في انتصاف الأشهر

    They shine joyfully as if their faces

    Are radiant moons at mid-month

  29. يتطلّبون المجدَ بين ديارهم

    مأوى اللهيف ومستَزارَ المعسرِ

    They seek glory among their abodes

    Shelter of the displaced and cloak of the destitute

  30. شيب وشبّان كآساد الشَّرى

    أَلفُو متون السابحات الضُّمّرِ

    Elder and youth like lions of valor

    Who befriend the riding camels' saddles

  31. قُبٌ سلاهبُ كالأجادل تحتها

    كأسود بيشة أَو كجنةِ عَبْقَرِ

    Tribes like courageous heroes under which

    Are lions of the thickets or like the fearless leopard

  32. قومٌ إذا ما مسَّهم ظمأ إلى

    تعديل باغٍ أَو إقامة أَزْوَرِ

    A people, if thirsty for irrigating a pasture

    Or founding a village, they shed their blood

  33. ورَدوا حياضَ الموت يُمطرها دماً

    زرقُ الأسنّة في غمام العِثْيرِ

    Blue swords in the clouds of dust

    And Muhammed is more generous than a master

  34. ومحمدٌ أكرم بهِ من سيّدِ

    سامٍ لحوز المكْرَمات مُشَمّرِ

    Adorning the abode of honor untiring

    Well-mannered with traits refined to

  35. ومهذبٌ نيطت خلائقه إلى

    حسب كريم في العتيك مطهّرِ

    Noble lineage and purified origin

    Protecting revealing his talents with

  36. ومحافظٌ تبدي مواهبه على

    عرض جميل بالثنّاءِ مُعطّرِ

    Praise on a beautiful and perfumed reputation

    And if you look at the radiance of his face

  37. وإذا نظرتَ إلى تهلّل وجهه

    في الدَّست أسفر كالمصباح المسفرِ

    In prosperity brighter than a flaming torch

    O teacher of both eyes, the world learned of you

  38. يا مُعلمَ الطرفين قد علم الورى

    لك بيننا علم العلى والمفخَرِ

    The banner of glory and pride between us

    Your noble uncles, the generous Yemenis

  39. أعمامك اليمن الكرام وأصبحت

    لك في نزارَ خؤولة لم تُنْزرِ

    And you became in the progeny of Nazar

    That was never sown with contempt

  40. وعُلىً الحيّين أنت لديها

    تأوي إلى حسب أغرّ مُشهَّرِ

    And O exalted among the living you reside

    With them of noble origin most luminous

  41. ولقد وجدتك يا محمّد ماجداً

    تقفو أباك إلى المحلّ الأكبرِ

    And I found you, O Majid, emulating

    Your father to the greatest extent

  42. تبغي الثناءَ وما نبتك حداثة

    عن سعي كفل للأمور مدّبرِ

    Seeking praise while your youth

    Did not prevent you from pursuing affairs prudently

  43. أحضرتني نعمى أبي عمر فلم

    أفقد سوى شخص له لم يحضرِ

    The blessings of my father Umar brought me

    And I lost none but one whose presence was missed

  44. فقضى الإلهُ له السّلامة كلّها

    ماظلَّ يحذره وما لم يحذرِ

    So God ordained well-being entirely for him

    What he feared and what he did not fear

  45. وأطال عمرك عامر لمكارم

    ومآثر لولاكم لم تَعمُرِ

    And prolonged your age-abounding life

    For generous deeds and glories that without you would not flourish

  46. واسلمْ وعشْ عام هكذا

    عيّد وصُمْ طولَ الزَّمان وأفطرِ

    Submit, live this year in such manner

    Celebrate, fast the length of time, and break fast.
