1. نَظَرتْ إليكَ بَطَرف أَكْحَلَ أَدعْجٍ

    فكأنَّما نظَرَت بِمُقْلة بِحَزَجِ

    She looked at you with a kohl-lined eyelid

    As if she looked with a twisted eyebrow

  2. وتلفَّعت فأرتْكَ بينَ قلائدٍ

    من لؤلؤ جيدَ الغَزال العوْهَجِ

    She was adorned with necklaces

    Of beautiful pearls like the neck of a young gazelle

  3. وكأنَ خَوط البان حشُو مُروطها

    تَهْتَزُّ بينَ مُخَلْخَلٍ ومُدَمْلَجِ

    It's as if the threads of her dress

    Sway between sequins and embroidery

  4. وتَعَرّضت بِمُورَدّ وتَبَسَّمَت

    عن واضح كالاقحَوانِ مُفَلَّجِ

    She showed her cheek and smiled

    Revealing teeth like polished pearls

  5. وتَزينُ أَثناء الوشاح بمُخْطَفٍ

    قَلق المنطَّق كالرّداءِ المُدرَجِ

    Her veil is adorned with a brooch

    Restless like a flowing robe

  6. تُضْحي على ظَهر الحَشيّة دابُها

    تكْسيرُ جَفْنٍ بالنُّعاسِ مُشنَّجِ

    Her mount sways under the litter

    Like a drowsy eyelid heavy with sleep

  7. حتَّى إذا نَهضّت بغيْر تَبَذُّل

    ظلّت تنوءُ بِرَدْفها المَتَرجرجِ

    When she got up without reluctance

    Her trailing dress dragged behind

  8. وَمَشَتْ تثني في المَجَاسد والحلى

    بيْنَ الولائدِ مِشْيَة الرَّجل الوَجي

    She walked swaying her trinkets and jewels

    With the gait of a sturdy man

  9. عزمَ الأحبّة للرَحيل وما قضوا

    لكَ من زمامٍ في الهوى بِمعَرَّجِ

    The loved ones decided to depart

    But you held no rein over their love

  10. رَفعوا الحُدوجُ على الرّكاب فليتَهم

    نَحروا الرَّكاب وليتها لم تُحْدَجِ

    They raised the litters onto the mounts - if only

    They had slaughtered the mounts and she had not traveled

  11. وغَدَوا بشَمْسٍ في الحُدوجِ طلوعُها

    من كِلَّةٍ وغروبُها في هوْدَجِ

    They left at dawn, its emergence in the litters

    From darkness, and its setting in gloom

  12. لم يفْجؤوك بَينّهم ولقد جرى

    لك عند زجر الحاجلات الشّحجِ

    They did not bid you farewell, though it was customary

    For you at the camel driver’s call

  13. إنّ الفؤاد لبِين عَمْرةَ شفّه

    لذعُ الغُرامِ بجَمْرهِ المتأجِّجِ

    Indeed, the heart reveals the pain of love

    Stinging ember of burning passion

  14. وأكاد أَسلو ثمّ يبْعَثُ لوعتي

    طيفٌ لَعمرة شائقي ومهَيجيِ

    I almost forget, then yearning awakens

    A vision of my life and passion

  15. طيفٌ إذا انسدل الظَّلامُ أَلمَّ بي

    بعدَ الهُدو طْروقَ سارٍ مُدْلجِ

    A vision that envelops me when darkness falls

    After calm, in the stillness of night

  16. ولقَد أَبْيتُ محالفاً أَلم الجَوى

    والجو مشتمل بثوب يرَندَجِ

    I refused to endure the agony of love

    While the atmosphere was clad in a flowing robe

  17. ليلٌ يُماطلُني الصّباحَ وقد رأَى

    أَرَقي ممَاطلةَ الغَريم المنفَجِ

    A night that lingers until dawn, having seen

    My wakefulness, like a lingering foe

  18. يَهنيكِ عَمْرةُ نوم ليْلِكَ إنّني

    قاسَيتُهُ بصَبابة الشّرقِ الشّجيِ

    Goodnight to your night’s sleep - I endured it

    With the torment of an aching east wind

  19. ولَرُبّ عيْشٍ قد رشَفْت رُضابَه

    عَلَلاً مزاج سُلافةٍ لم تُمزَجِ

    And days of joy I have sipped before

    Ailments of an unpleasant mood unblended

  20. في روْضة نسَجَ السّحَابُ لأرضها

    وَشيْيّنِ بيْنَ مُفَوف ومُدَّبجِ

    In a meadow the clouds have woven for it

    Pearl necklaces between beads and embroidery

  21. بمُلَوّناتِ الزّهْر والنُّوّار مِن

    نَيْلوفر وشقائقِ وبنفسجِ

    With flowers of varied colors

    Water lilies, poppies, and violets

  22. لَبسَتْ حُليّاً من عقيقٍ أَحْمَرٍ

    وزَبْرَجَدٍ خضرِ ومن فيْرورَجِ

    She wore red carnelian jewelry

    And green turquoise and aquamarine

  23. باكرتُها بالمُلْهياتِ وقدْ بدُتْ

    راياتُ بُشْرى صُبْحِها المُتَبلِّجِ

    I came early with diversions, and there emerged

    The flags of its bright dawn

  24. وتَرشَّفَت من أُفقها بَلَلَ النَّدى

    واسْتَنْشَقتْ لَفسَ النَّسيم السَّجْسَجِ

    And from its horizon dripped dewdrops

    And it inhaled the scent of the rustling breeze

  25. وكأنّها نشَرت لنا ريحُ الصّبا

    رَيَّا ثناءٍ عاطرٍ مُتَأرَجِ

    As if for us the morning breeze had spread

    A fragrant breeze of praise, richly scented

  26. لمُحَمّد الزَّاكي ونبْهان الرِّضى

    وأَبي الحُسَيْن اللَّوذَعيّ الأَبلَجِ

    For Muhammad the devout, and Nabhan the pleased

    And my father Hussein the refined and eloquent

  27. أَعْني بني عُمرٍ ثلاثة سادَةٍ

    مثلَ البدورِ مَحلُّهم في الأُبرُجِ

    I mean the three masters of the Bani Umar

    Whose abode is in the stars like the full moons

  28. شُمُّ المعاطسِ ماجدون لماجدِ

    ومُتَوَّجون تَناسَبوا لمُتوّجِ

    Scent of praise, they are glorious for the glorious

    And crowned - well-matched with the crowned

  29. عَرَصاتهم مَغْنى الفقير المُعتَفي

    وحُصونُهم مأوى اللَّهيف المُزْعَجِ

    Their threshing floors provide for the needy poor

    Their fortresses shelter the displaced refugee

  30. أَيديهُم هُطْلٌ يسُحّْ نوالُها

    دَيْماً كسّح العارِضِ المثجَّجِ

    Their hands constantly pour bounty

    Like the pouring rain from laden clouds

  31. سِنَّ العَتيكُ لهُم مكارمَ في العُلى

    فَجَرَوا بِهنّ على سواءِ المَنْهَجِ

    The sword of valor - they marched with it equally

    On the path of high virtue

  32. من كل أروَع كالهلالِ سَميدَعٍ

    بَطَلٍ رحيب الباع غير مُزَلَّجِ

    The most splendid of men, like the full crescent moon

    A hero of formidable build and unbending

  33. وإذا الخُصومُ تَدافعوا بِجدالهم

    أَدلى بحُجَّته ولم يتَلَجْلَجِ

    When opponents clashed with argument

    He presented his case without confusion

  34. وإذا تَعَرَّض للنِزْال رأَيتَه

    بين الكتائب كالهَزبر المُخْرجِ

    And if he joined battle you would see him

    Among the regiments like a fiery meteor

  35. يَغشى الوَغي بين الاسنَّة والظبي

    كالشّهْب تَلْمَعُ في الخميس المُرهِجِ

    He covered the battlefield among the stallions and gazelles

    Like a shooting star blazing on a moonlit night

  36. والخيلُ شُعْثٌ كالصُّقور عوابسٌ

    في النَّقع سابحةٌ بكل مُدَجَّجِ

    While the horses with ruffled manes like hawks

    Swim in the meadow with each dust-laden one

  37. في جُحْفَلٍ لَجبِ المُجال عَرمَرَم

    كالليّل أَسْحَم بالقتام مُخَرَّجِ

    In a squadron riding the battlefield, dusty as night,

    Obscured by darkness, immersed in gloom

  38. فتَرى بني نَبْهان كل مباشرٍ

    للحَرب في غَمَرانها مُتوّلجِ

    You see the Bani Nabhan, each a warrior

    Tested in its calamities, deftly charging

  39. قوٌم إذا سمعوا النّداءِ رأَيتَهُم

    في مُلْجِمٍ نَحْو الصّريخ ومُسرجِ

    Men who when they hear the call you see them

    In equipment, towards the battle cry urging their rides

  40. تُعْدو بِهم قُبُّ البُطون ضَوامِرٌ

    جُردٌ سُلالةُ لاحقٍ والأعوَجِ

    With them the stallions race, thoroughbred grays

    Bared blades, descendants of ancestors noble and free

  41. أَلفوا مُقامَهم على صَهواتها

    فكأنما لسواهُمُ لم تُنْتَجِ

    They have known their stance on the back of their steeds

    As if none but them have ever mounted

  42. حتَّى إذا حضَروا النَّديَّ رأَيتَهُمْ

    مثْل الاهلَّةِ في فتوقِ الزّبْرجِ

    When they attend the battle you see them

    Like celestial bodies in the blackness of night

  43. أبناءٌ نبْهان لَهُم شَرَفُ

    وَلَهُمْ سَنا مصْباحها المُتَوَهجِ

    The Bani Nabhan, noble of lineage

    And brilliance - their beacon burns bright

  44. والنَّاسُ كلُّ منهم بمحَمّد

    ونَوال نَبْهانٍ وأَحْمَدَ مُرْتَجيِ

    People all bear love for Muhammad

    And Nabhan’s bliss, and Ahmad they seek

  45. فبقوا بَنو عُمَرٍ وعَاشوا عِصْمةً

    للمُسْتَجير ونعْمَةَ للْمُحْوجِ

    So remain, O Bani Umar, and live as protection

    For the seeker of refuge and bounty for the needy
