1. What befell my locks and turned them gray?

    I dyed them, but whiteness stripped away their dye.

  2. The cares that came by night crept in and left

    Their aches between my ribs and in my inward parts.

  3. The tears remained frozen until

    Sorrow's pain touched them—and suddenly, there they were.

  4. I have tasted the loss of loved ones for a time,

    And severed their bonds in passion's grasp.

  5. I voice my reproach against the days, but

    Prolonging my reproach brings me no amends from them.

  6. As for calamities that arise, you will never find

    Me heedless of preparedness, and thus afraid of them.

  7. The changing turns of circumstance have left me

    A bulwark against calamities, blunting their fangs.

  8. I am steadfast; I have never quailed at parting.

    Before leaving home, I had already driven off its raven.

  9. My regret is that I enjoyed youth to the full,

    Yet I think my soul has not fulfilled its desires.

  10. How often I let it trail the reins of passion

    In revelry, it keeps its youth out of the reckoning.

  11. I have joined drinking companions among country estates,

    Who were served their drink of pure wine.

  12. And visited the lady of the tent by night, though before her

    Dusky lances spent the night surrounding her pavilions.

  13. And indeed I spend the night crossing the trackless wilderness,

    And cleave its cloak of the night's deep darkness.

  14. And wade through the forenoon's shimmer in the desert,

    While the bewildered sun spits out its saliva.

  15. And compose bright, enduring verses, praising

    The proud kings and recounting their noble lineages.

  16. I would give my life for the sons of Umar ibn Nabhan, who

    Were granted eminence and clothed themselves in its robes.

  17. The house of al-Atik, heirs to the stock of the

    Noble Azd—its true core and finest essence.

  18. Who bear the clan's guilt on its behalf,

    And support it against whatever befalls it.

  19. Who plunge into its depths amid the fray,

    And open the gates that lead to eminence.

  20. They are the lions in battle, having made their home

    In their thickets between reins and spearheads.

  21. And if the clan is beset by a calamity

    One day, they handle its ordeal and plead its case.

  22. And whenever a misfortune comes and tests them,

    They prove strong of shaft, firm and unyielding.

  23. They bore themselves nobly, though bereaved of a noble woman;

    They did not let her loss drive their souls to anguish.

  24. They held fast to fortitude, and seldom had they suffered what

    Makes men forget their wits in bewilderment.

  25. Death descended upon the cherished lady of her people,

    And slew her by stealth, scaling the wall of her sanctuary.

  26. And fortune attests that she is the sun of eminence:

    She set, and undid her veil in the open waste.

  27. With noble virtues and wisdom, she dwelt in

    The belly of the earth, while her age-mates remain.

  28. There is no escaping what I witnessed; only

    Her parting from her loved ones calls for pity.

  29. She was spared time's vicissitudes, and I experienced

    Her bliss and her reward in God's presence.
