1. Do not reproach me, you two, if I weep over ruined traces,

    and recall an old bond with the beloved.

  2. And I yearned when I sought, from the gleam of lightning,

    a glimpse, and from the waft of ʿarār a fragrance.

  3. And the companion of longing never ceases to watch

    for a lightning flash and a breeze from every horizon.

  4. The paths of remembrance of those far away—as though

    love had left a creditor with me because of them.

  5. As for love, it has indeed brought burning anguish upon me

    on the day of parting; and indeed I pass the night ill.

  6. And my uncle Abu Ishaq, when I meet him,

    quenches my burning thirst or dispels my cares.

  7. If the beloved's face has eluded me, then I

    have been given Ibrahim's face in its place.

  8. A face you behold, when it smiles upon bounty,

    handsome in a season of noble deeds.

  9. And through him I beheld the embodiment of my wishes,

    and attained a wish and gained bliss.

  10. And I knew that, upon meeting him, I would find

    bounty, veneration, and great honor.

  11. You have come, O ʿAmrī, to belong to

    the lineage of the noble, and have grown up noble.

  12. And you have made a habit of the deeds of the virtuous,

    since you were endowed with a generous disposition.

  13. And you have taken your place in the house of al-Azd, upon its battlements,

    and you [sprang] from the house of al-ʿAtīk, of pure stock.

  14. And they possess ancient honor; it has always been

    known, from of old, that their eminence is ancient.

  15. O you returning from pilgrimage to your God's House,

    purest of humankind in absence and return,

  16. welcome to your appearance, which has brought forth

    stars with good fortune upon the horizon of heaven.

  17. Your virtues have embraced the gatherings, and now

    noble deeds and eminence are strung together as one.

  18. Today every person in need has come

    to hope for an abundant gift from your generosity.

  19. So rejoice—may you live on—and may, in gladness,

    safety's camp ever remain within your shelter.

  20. And may you attain in your son what gladdens you, secure

    therein from fear of calamities, and unharmed.
