محمد المَجنُونُ إِن نَمَّ أو غَنَّى
تَنَهوَلَ مَن مِنَّا وَمن لَم يَكُن مِنَّا
Muhammad the Madman—whether he tells tales or sings—
transports everyone among us, and everyone not of us.
فَتًى فَاقَ في التَّغرِيدِ كُلَّ مُغَرِّدٍ
إِذَا سَمِعَ الصُّوفي نَغمَتِهِ جُنَّا
A youth who surpassed every warbler in song;
when the Sufi hears his melody, we go mad with ecstasy.
يُذَكِّرنُا صَوتَ الفَصِيلِ إِذَا رَغَى
وَيطرُدُ مَا في القَلبِ مِن كَدَرٍ عَنَّا
He recalls to us the voice of a camel calf when it bellows,
and drives away from us the murk within the heart.
