1. آي أطلاَلِ الأوِدَاءِ

    هَيَّجت لاَعِجَ الدَّاءِ

    O ruins of affection

    You have provoked incurable pain

  2. لَعِبَت قُومُ الرياحِ بِها

    وَعَفَتهَا كُلُّ نَكبَاءِ

    The winds have played with them

    And every adversity has worn them out

  3. وَمَحَا السَّافي مَعَالِمَهَا

    غَيرَ آرِىِّ وآنَاءِ

    The torrents have erased their features

    Except foundations and columns

  4. وَسقَتهَا كُلُّ سَارِيَّةٍ

    من غَمَامِ الدلوِ هَطلاءِ

    And every downpour has watered them

    With rain from the buckets of clouds

  5. فَجَرَى فِيهَا الآتِىُّ إلى

    أن جَلاَ عَن كُلُّ صَفوَاءِ

    So the floods have run in them

    Until they hid every open space

  6. إِن نَكُن أَصبَحَت خَلَفاً

    قَفرَةً بعدَ الأحِبَّاءِ

    If we have become ruins

    Desolate after loved ones

  7. فَهَواهَا غيرُ مُندَرِسٍ

    لَم يَزل يغلي بِأحشَائِى

    Yet their allure has not collapsed

    It still seethes in my entrails

  8. إن يعتري فيهَا لَمُرتَبَعاً

    طَيِّباً مَلذوذَ آنَاءِ

    If I pitch my tent in them

    A good, sweet, lovely time

  9. كُنتُ فِيها بَينَ أندِيَةٍ

    قَد علت في كُلِّ عَليَاءِ

    I was among assemblies

    That transcended all sublime

  10. عُرِفَت بالمَجدِ قد وَرِثَت

    مَجدَهَا عن مَجدِ آبَاءِ

    Known for glory, inherited

    Glory from fathers

  11. لا يحل الذَّمُّ سَاحَتَنَا

    مِن حمًى دَانٍ ولاَ نَاءِ

    No blame may touch our domain

    From protecting friend or foe

  12. نُوضِحُ العَوصَا إن التَبَسَت

    فَنُرِيَها غيرَ عَوصَاءِ

    We clarify what is obscured

    Showing it free of crookedness

  13. ونَذُودَ الزَّيغَ حِينَ عَرَا

    بِعَصَا آىٍ وأنبَاءِ

    We block heresy when it appears

    With a staff, signs, and tidings

  14. فإِذَا ضَيفٌ ألَمَّ بِنَا

    نَالَ مِنَّا خَيرَ إيَوَاءِ

    When a guest visits in distress

    We give him best reception

  15. فَالقِرَى يَأتِيهِ مُحتَمَلاً

    دُونَمَا مَنِّ وإِيَذاءِ

    So he comes to us unoppressed

    Without demand or hurt

  16. إن أتَى لَم يَخشَ مَسألَةً

    لَم نُكَلِّفهُ بِإهدَاءِ

    If he comes he fears no request

    We tax him with no gift

  17. فَسؤَالِ الضَّيفش مَنقَصَةٌ

    وَخنًى عِندَ الأَلبَّاءِ

    To ask a guest demeans

    Among the glorious ones

  18. إن أتَانَا الشعرُ مِن أحَدٍ

    لَم يُجِب عَنَّا أمرُؤٌ نَاءِ

    If one brings us poetry

    No effeminate answers us

  19. فَألقَوا في طَوعِ قَبضَتِنا

    عِندَ إلحَامٍ وإسدَاءِ

    So they put in our grasp

    When we grasp and confer

  20. نَأخُذُ المعنَى البديعَ بِلاَ

    كُلفَةٍ في نَهجِهِ الجَائِى

    We take the splendid meaning without

    Affectation in its course

  21. لم يَكُ المصباحُ يعتري كُفئاً

    لاَ تَظُنُّوه من أَكفَائِى

    The lamp was no makeshift

    Think it not my peer

  22. لَيسَ كالسعدَانِ كَانَ كَلاً

    انبَتَتهُ كُلُّ بَيدَاءِ

    It's not like lightning was

    That every wasteland nursed

  23. ما السُّها مثلَ الشموسِ ومَا

    كُلُّ مَاءٍ مِثلَ صَدَّاءِ

    Dews are not like suns

    Nor every water pure

  24. فَهوَ رَاعٍ شَبَّ في مَلأٍ

    مِن رُعَاةِ الإبل والشاءِ

    He is a shepherd who grew in a throng

    Of camel and sheep herders

  25. مَلأٍ بالعارِ مُمتَزِج

    كامتزاجِ الرِّسلِ بالماء

    A throng steeped in shame

    Like the mixing of messengers and water

  26. لَو رَأى الرائِى سريرتَه

    لازدَرَتهُ مُقلَةُ الرائِى

    If the seer saw his nature

    The sight would scorn the seer

  27. ليس يدرِى مِنجهالتِه

    كُلَّ شىء وَزنَ أشياء

    He knows not from ignorance

    Everything, weighing things

  28. يَدَّعِى شعراً ويخبط في

    كل معنى خبط عشواء

    He claims poetry and flails in

    Every meaning, flailing blind

  29. إن يَرُم انشاءَ قافيةٍ

    ظنه أنشَى كانشائِى

    If he aims to fashion a rhyme

    He thinks he inspired mine

  30. كلفٍ بالغَىَّ يَتبعُه

    بالنميم الصِّرفِ مَشَّاءِ

    Effortful yet following it

    With gossip's ramble aloof

  31. قَلَّدُوا الأهوَاءَ واتبعُوا

    نَهج أهوَاءٍ وآرَاءِ

    They aped passions and pursued

    The course of passions and views

  32. شِيبُهم لِلعِلمِ إِن جَنَحُوا

    لم يميزُوا الكَافَ مِن رَاءِ

    Their grey hair, if inclined to science

    Knew not “k” from “r”

  33. حَذِّرُوهُ قبلَ دَاهِيةٍ

    من دواهِى الهجوِ دَهيَاءِ

    Warn him before foolhardiness

    From the abyss of sarcasm

  34. لم يطق دفعا لها أبَداً

    جندُ إخفَاءٍ وإبدَاءِ

    No troops have ever repelled them

    Of hiding and revealing

  35. حَذوُرا المصباحَ مِن داءٍ

    مخجلٍ بَينَ أندَاءِ

    Beware the lamp from a malady

    That shames among intimates
