في اجتِنَابِ الأتَايِ لِلمرءِ ذَامُ

إِذ بِهِ تُكرَمُ الضيوفُ الكِرَامُ

There is merit for a man in avoiding blame

For with it honored guests are welcomed

والضيوفُ اللِّئَامُ لم ترض أيضاً

بسواه شَرُّ الضُّيُوفِ اللِّئَامُ

But ignoble guests are not pleased

With other than the worst of ignoble guests

فَمُقِيمٌ أخُو مُقَامٍ بِأرضٍ

لَيسَ فِيها تَنحَطُّ مِنهُ المَقَامُ

So a resident is as a guest staying in a land

Where status does not diminish for him

بلد ينقص الأريب مقاما

لم يطب فيه للأريب مقام

A country where the cultured man's status lessens

Has not been a pleasant land for the cultured man to stay
