The grief that was hidden in the ruins of the house overflowed,

A trace on the sands where loved ones once tread,

Patience and solace were awakened, igniting

A fire of sorrows in my heart's depths,

And passion, longing, and melancholy were kindled,

As tears flowed from my heavy eyelids,

Running like the holes of a pouring waterskin,

A trace after days of companionship with chaste friends,

    The righteous and the nobles.

Its beauty was wasted by nights of yearning

For the downpours of the constant drizzle,

Its signs faded and its prime vanished,

    Deteriorating from its pristine perfection.

If it appears now as an empty wasteland

With confused tracks and a weeping eye for its ruins,

The beholder sees in it only a mirage

After the lovely vision that appeared to his eye.

For how many graceful wild cows were in it,

With smooth legs and fawn-like eyes.

And maidens with pendulous breasts and round hips

In their youthful prime with naïve coquetry,

Ladies of prominent lineage and soft beauty

Whose kisses after fate's blow had the taste of myrrh,

    And honey and golden nectar,

And who had a melody at which the earth quaked

And the barren desert burst into bloom,

    While their wine-stained mouths

    Were colored by passion's dye.

And how often I visited its dwellings after they were lost,

While my enemies only sought my ruin.

Yet separation from it did not make me forget it,

Nor did the blame of those who censured my love,

O Dauḍ, if only your acceptance could heal

My heart, sickened by following selfish passions,

O Dauḍ, how often I was passionately in love with you,

Enamored with the stars and flower gardens,

And how often I endured the insults of separation

Just for the chance to meet you, though you were hostile.

O Dauḍ, I have not forgotten you through long absence,

No, nor has your resistance kept me from meeting you,

So have mercy on a faithful lover whom

The ruins and passing days have wasted away,

And whom your glances like arrows shot by

Dark-eyed gazelles have struck deaf and dumb.

And the wailing nights and echoes

And terrifying jinn with their eerie sounds

As if the clamors were intermingled with each other.

I came at night while darkness covered the plump arms

And bosoms of maidens on a pleasure outing.

She rushes like a phoenix, longing in her seclusion

For the thickets and ruined dwellings,

The oryx begins to bellow mournfully when

Weariness makes her indifferent at the cistern,

Soon the weeks after separation will pass

And the honest youth will return at daybreak,

The brilliant sun of guidance, the Imam Abu Bakr,

The pious protector of the radiant Way.

Through him glory was established after ruin

And error corrected after going astray,

Through him the darkness of ignorance faded into morning

And knowledge shone after being hidden,

O refuge of the weak in every tribulation,

O generous one of mothers and fathers,

O life of the two brilliances, O meeting of the two seas,

O you who warn and encourage,

O protector of the orphans and shelter for all humanity,

O source of kindness spreading in every region,

O Imam of the pious in knowledge, O you who are

The guiding lamp in the dark night,

I have a heart that ignorance and corruption have ruled,

So it is a den of echoing voices,

    Weak, neglecting righteousness and seemliness,

Quickly inclined to error and disgrace,

It has made desire and selfish whims its masters,

    Misguided by corrupt opinions,

It was long engrossed in musical gatherings

And drinking spiced wine from rosy lips

Of singing girls, so rectify its mirror

    Through discipline and wisdom's recitation,

And make it gentle, for how often have you softened

Hearts harder than solid rock through your mention,

And save it, for it will be most wretched if not saved

    From being barren and unproductive.

May your prayers be upon me like the gentle wind

And ambergris perfume on one honored with the Night Journey.

How the leaves of sadness for you have withered, and how my yearning

Has ceased that once cried out in passion.
