I asked the drop from my cup
It is my cup, and I am the one who feels its water
I asked the drop from my cup, but
Its coolness did not quench my thirst
Or warm it, for it is my cup alone
And I alone in life have lost it
This is the cup I drink from
And it knows that I am a slave of its seeking
This cup is always brimming
With regrets, so why don't I see it?
It overpowered my senses and destroyed my vigilance
And my existence, and sped toward its course
It makes reason firm and erases it as
He who made the dawn and the beginning lit it
O daughter of the world and polish of its beauty
And the swirling ruin from the fire of its misery
How could I not meet you one day like
People met their loved ones and tasted their passion?
They enjoyed you and you were sweet
Genius, bliss, and comfort to them
While I only tasted from you
Burning that I lived with, my sister
It is you, my cup, who made me suffer
Your living cup, eyes and lips
And a throbbing, flaming heart
That desires you above the world, my God
I devoted my life to dreams of meeting
And spent my life infatuated and heedless
I devoted my life to dreams of meeting
And spent my life infatuated and heedless
Happy one moment and angry the next
Bound by two tyrants, my soul and its passion
It is you, my cup, that made me wither
Whoever watered your vines with the old wine
I am your pourer so do not begrudge
My life drops of your sweetness
I pour them so you taste sweet like
The bitter view made sweet
You, my cup, and how close I am
To your innermost sealed meaning
Do not always be burning embers
For I am the living drink and the cupbearer
Hello, O cup, as long as passion
Fills your beads, melting and raving
Do not disappear even once
And swim, O cup, in my rapture and fervor
Kiss my soul and heart and strew
Over my longing the clouds' showers
And take me from my grief and loneliness
And crush my being as the learned fall in love
And spread your magic, fill me, and make
Without your abode my destitution zealous
And send the mysteries of what you poured
From the hand of light and its boundless bestowal
The outpouring that drowned me
And floated around me, kind and compassionate to me
