1. أَإِن ظعن الخليط ضحى فبانا

    أبنت الوجدَ مكتتما فبانا

    The morning sun revealed her weeping eyes

    Hidden sorrows now apparent in her cries

  2. فتذرى الدمع من أسف وتبدى

    دفين الوجد اذ شدوا الظعانا

    Tears of sadness begin to flow and expose

    Buried passions when she faced the dawn's light

  3. وقد هاج المتيم أن تنادوا

    ورموا للنوى إبلا هِجانَا

    The lovelorn cannot help but call her name

    Tossing sleepless through the long night's pain

  4. وساروا بالمطى ضحى وعالوا

    على الظعن السوالف أرجوانا

    Riding off at dawn, ascending on high

    Their mounts adorned, brave steeds trotting by

  5. نأوك وقد نأوك ضحى بأحوى

    كلفت به وقد شغف الجَنانا

    You shun me, though you’re the one whom my soul desires

    Tormented am I by love’s consuming fires

  6. رنا ظبي فأقصد مَن رماه

    بسهمى مقلتيه وماس بانا

    I chase the gazelle I shot with my arrow

    Wounding its shoulder, the blood flowing thorough

  7. ويبسم حين يبسم ويبدى

    بأشنيه المنصب أقحوانا

    When he smiles, his radiant beauty shines bright

    Perfect teeth gleaming pearly white

  8. كأن بنانه عنم لطيف

    يشيربه وقد خضبت البنانا

    His soft lips like sweetest wine

    That stains his mouth a crimson divine

  9. ينوء بردفه نوءا فيمشى

    نزيفا مشى ذى خطو مدانى

    Swaying with a loveliness no other can claim

    Bleeding with each step, though too proud to show his pain

  10. تفيض لذكره عبرات طرفي

    ولا أنفك أذكر يوم بانا

    At the mere thought of him my tears start to fall

    Endlessly I recall our last farewell

  11. أقول لعاذلى وليس من لم

    يُعَنَّى في البكاء كمن أعانا

    To those who blame me I say: do not reprove

    He who has not loved can't know a lover's woe

  12. ذرانى والبكاءَ فليس جفنا

    أخى الذكرى لعبرته صوانا

    Leave me to my tears, for my eyes will never run dry

    With memories that make me weep until I die

  13. يراجعه تذكره تهمى

    مدامع طرفه آنا فآنا

    If thoughts of him fill my mind without cease

    My flowing tears only increase and increase

  14. ألم يان ارعواءك حين آنا

    مشيبك والتحلم آن لآنا

    Friends, when you saw how old and tired I've grown

    Why didn't you heed the wisdom age has shown?

  15. تجنبت المعازف والملاهي

    فلاعودا سمعته ولاكوانا

    I've given up music and laugheter, it's true

    No more will I listen to songs, no more will I dance

  16. تقول أمامُ مالك لم تزرنا

    بعيشك هل علقت بمَن سوانا

    You say: Why don't you visit us more and share

    The joys of your life that you no longer seem to care?

  17. فقلت ألم ترى شمطا بفودي

    بدا والشيب إنَّ له لشانا

    I say: Have you not seen the white in my beard?

    It's clear that for such frivolities I've no time to spare

  18. ذريني يا أمامُ فلست ممن

    عن المجد المؤثل قد توانى

    Let me be, my friends, for I'll never refrain

    From seeking the glory that comes not from worldly gain

  19. عزيز ما استعنت بغير ربي

    ولكني اعين من استعانا

    I ask strength from no one but God on high

    Yet help all who on me for assistance rely

  20. وأكرم بالقرى والبشر ضيفي

    وأمنع جار بيتي أن يهانا

    I shelter each guest who comes to my tribe

    And protect every neighbor from those who deride

  21. وقد علمت بنو حسن غنائي

    إذا حاولت ضربا أو طعانا

    The clan of Hasan knows my strong sword arm

    In battle I'm fearless, and safe from all harm

  22. فما أنا للعدو بمستكين

    ولا ألفي لدى الهيجا جبانا

    No coward am I when confronting the foe

    No weakness I show when face to face with the blow

  23. ولم أرهب سباب أخي قريض

    يهيج الصلب لى لو كان نانا

    I'm not intimidated by insults from an antagonist

    My courage cannot be shaken by words of an antagonist

  24. سلى إن تجهلي الأنداء عنا

    يُخبِّركِ الفقيرُ ومَن تغانى

    Don't believe those who nothing of me comprehend

    For the truth will be told by the poor I befriend

  25. بأنا نستبيح حمى الأعادي

    وأنا في الكريهة لا نعانى

    We loot no protected land and take no one's life

    And submit to our fate without anger or strife

  26. ونعطى المعتفيني الكوم عودا

    وفي المشتاة ننحرها سمانا

    We give dry wood to those shivering cold

    And slaughter the fattened sheep for guests to hold

  27. ونقرى الوفد في الألوى وندني

    إليه أكؤسا تحكى الدهانا

    We welcome each stranger with wine in our tents

    And regale them with tales and merriment

  28. ونبحث يومنا عن كل فن

    ونلفي ليلنا نتلو القرآنا

    We spend our days searching for every delight

    And pass our nights reciting verses so bright

  29. ونجمع في مساجدنا وكنا

    نديم بها الاقامة والآذانا

    Gathered in mosques, ceaselessly we pray

    Listening to the calls that mark night and day

  30. عرفنا بالصلاح فكل شيخ

    شهير الفضل أروى من سَنَانا

    We're known for our virtue, every elder and sheikh

    Wise men of knowledge our people seek

  31. ذريني يا أمامُ فإن سَترِى

    جميل بالفضيحة لن يشانا

    Let me be, friend, for though you impugn my good name

    I'll not retaliate or play your malicious game

  32. فما كنت تعق أمامُ أمى

    ولم يك بالعقوق أبي مهانا

    I honored my mother and father, as was meet

    Never did I disgrace them or treat them as less than elite

  33. ولم أفضح بفاحشة تؤدى

    إلى سجن أهان به زمانا

    No scandalous sins have I committed or vile crimes

    That would bring prison walls or darken these times

  34. ولم أعتض أنوءا من نهوض

    ولم يعهد لذى لغة لسانا

    I've neither flinched from my obligations nor shirked any duty

    Nor insulted anyone known for wisdom and beauty

  35. ولم افخر وقد علمت أناس

    قبيحى ما استكن وما استبانا

    I don't boast of glory I haven't earned fair and square

    Spreading lies that I'm something beyond what I am, I forswear

  36. ألا فافخر فويسقُ ثم أخبر

    لدى النادى فلانةً أو فلانا

    For if I did as you claim, all who know me would say:

    "Look at him boast, though he amounts to nothing this day"

  37. فلو أخبرت من علموا لقالوا

    لقد فخر الفويسق ثم مانا

    You disgraced your father with the abuses you hurled

    May God who protects us from harm in this world

  38. أذلت بما هجوت أباك عِرضاً

    أبى الله المدبر أن يصانا

    Save us from such words as the ones you let fly

    Shaming the author of your days before all who stood by

  39. فليتك لم تقل لأبيك أفٍّ

    ولم تنهره في النادى عيانا

    And the judges who witnessed your rages so wild

    Said only a craven attacks his father reviled

  40. ولم يشهد عليك بذاك قاضى

    قضاة القطر حسبك ذا هوانا

    How dare you still brag after what you have done

    Attacking with lies those who are guiltless, while claiming you've won?

  41. أيفتخر الفويسق بعد هذا

    ويهجونا ببطل إذ فلانا

    You blamed us for your failings again and again

    But it's clear where the shame and dishonor remain

  42. هجانا من غوايته ومنا

    لسان الحال أنشد إذ هجانا

    O tribe of Khuza'a, I make no defense

    Men grant you respect, though you've brought only offense

  43. إليكم يا خزاعةُ لا إلينا

    عزا الناس الضراعة والهوانا

    If you look in your hearts, you'll know what I say:

    We offer the cure, you must heal the right way

  44. فلو برأت نفوسكمُ علمتم

    بأَن دواءَ دائكمُ لَدَانا

    Take this advice, o most arrogant boaster

    Lest your false pride be severed like grapes from the vine

  45. فخذها يا فخورُ فسوف تُلفي

    تقطع من مضاضتها أُنَانَا
