They surely heard his pronouncement at Khumm,
one morning, as the pool gathered them all.
“Who, then, has greater claim over you than you yourselves?” They replied
with one voice, though they were many:
all together, “You are our master, with greater claim
over us than we ourselves, and you are our warner.”
Then he spoke to them openly and aloud,
the words of a sincere counselor, while they were all in attendance:
“For indeed, your guardian after me is Ali,
and your master is he—the guide, the minister,
my minister in life and at my death,
and after me, the successor and commander.
So may God befriend whoever among you befriends him,
and may joy meet him when death comes.
And may God oppose whoever among you opposes him,
and may the Resurrection befall him when death comes.”
