1. Halt by the dwellings and greet them as dwellings;

    And water the traces with streaming tears.

  2. Al-Nawar and Zaynab once dwelt there;

    So may my God protect Zaynab and Nawar.

  3. Tell the one who opposed Muhammad's legatee

    And made his denial plain to me through his speech:

  4. Who possesses knowledge of the Book and its judgment?

    Who is a witness from him, following him in warning?

  5. He holds knowledge of afflictions and deaths;

    Decisive speech reached him and became his.

  6. And his was a witnessed battle at Badr;

    It was destruction for the wretched.

  7. So he made Shaybah and al-Walid taste death,

    When the two attacked him at dawn with a mighty, vast host.

  8. And made Utbah taste the same; for it he swung down

    A sharp sword, polished, keen-edged and cleaving.

  9. And his was worthy valor on the day of Uhud,

    While Mashrafi swords struck at retreating backs.

  10. When Gabriel came and called out openly

    Among the Muslims, making the righteous hear:

  11. There is no sword but Dhu al-Fiqar, and no young hero

    But Ali, if you count deeds of glory.

  12. Who, mending the Prophet Muhammad's sandal,

    Pleased God, the All-Forgiving, by his deed?

  13. So the best of humankind declares concerning him,

    Aloud, not confiding it in secret:

  14. This is my legatee among you and my successor.

    Do not fail to recognize him, lest you return as unbelievers.

  15. And for him, on the day of the great trees, came the greatest sermon;

    Through it he delivered God's revelation openly.

  16. And his is God's path, apart from His other servants;

    Whoever he guides is granted piety and dignity.

  17. In the scriptures he is recorded, made manifest by his name

    And by his description; so consult the accounts about him.

  18. Who had him as a neighbor in a mosque?

    Who attained kinship and nearness to him?

  19. And God admitted him and sent his people out,

    And chose him, over all creation, as a neighbor.

  20. Who had Gabriel standing at his right,

    There, with Michael standing at his left?

  21. Who had the angels of heaven supporting him,

    Coming to him as reinforcements, his helpers?

  22. Who affirmed God's oneness before every other monotheist,

    Calling upon God, the One, the All-Subduing?

  23. Who prayed toward both qiblas, while his people

    Were like braying asses carrying books?

  24. Who was called a believer in the Qur'an,

    In ten verses set apart as the choicest?

  25. Who said to the water, 'Gush forth!' and it gushed forth,

    Without burdening his hand with a digging tool,

  26. Until his army drank its fill of its waters,

    As it flowed over the low ground and surged?

  27. And at Karbala there were other signs before it;

    Through them he revived livestock and trees.

  28. And its monk came to him and willingly embraced Islam,

    In his company, and praised the intrepid horseman.

  29. Or for whom did the sun return after

    It had set and darkness had clothed it in a garment,

  30. Until it met the afternoon at its appointed times?

    And God bestowed this special favor upon him.

  31. Then it swiftly vanished behind the veil;

    God set a measure for its course.

  32. Who among them proclaimed disavowal

    Among the polytheists, warning the unbelievers:

  33. 'We disavow you all; so for months

    Travel the earth, all of you, as fugitives.'

  34. And he bought from Gabriel grain that had flourished

    In a garden not deprived of rivers.

  35. Gabriel sold to him, while Ahmad was his guest,

    The best of humankind in origin and lineage.
