1. O my two companions, go your way and leave me;

    the carefree man is not like one ablaze with sorrows.

  2. Were they the ones who fought in single combat on Badr’s morning

    amid the fierce duels of matched opponents,

  3. or was it others who faced them,

    while they stood at the farthest post and place,

  4. when Utbah, al-Walid, and his uncle came,

    walking in rings of mail?

  5. At last, when affairs had ended and been settled,

    and the blessed one, the possessor of knowledge, had passed away,

  6. they took the caliphate after that in a sudden move,

    and sought insight from one who possessed no faith.

  7. Was it in Ahmad’s testament that they should prevail

    if the Ansar contended for power?

  8. You witnessed his sons at prayer;

    you brought no clear proof concerning it.

  9. As for Abu Dharr, Salman, and Miq-

    dad, and Ammar, Abu al-Yaqzan,

  10. they did not cause Muhammad’s covenant to be forgotten

    deliberately, nor did they turn to concealment.

  11. Rather, they made clear what had been entrusted to them, and acted well;

    so God will reward them for their good deeds.
