1. And indeed, I marveled at one who once said to me—

    a learned, discerning man among the discerning:

  2. Have you forsaken your people, assailing their faith,

    and followed paths other than those of the jurists?

  3. Why not make room, through love for Muhammad's family,

    for love of everyone, and thus prove faithful?

  4. So I answered him with a reply not far

    from the truth, with my covering draped over it:

  5. The People of the Cloak are my beloved; they are those

    to whom God has commanded me to give allegiance.

  6. And for those who love them and uphold their faith,

    I owe them pure affection.

  7. And those who stubbornly oppose them bear my curse,

    and I single them out for my deliberate satire.

  8. And indeed, I marveled at one who once said to me—

    a learned, discerning man among the jurists:

  9. Your people called you Sayyid, and spoke truly in doing so;

    you are blessed with success, the master of poets.

  10. You are not, when you single out Muhammad's family

    for your praise, on a par with a poet

  11. who praised wealthy kings for their gifts;

    whereas your praise of them is for no gift.

  12. So rejoice, for you are triumphant in loving them,

    should you come before them for recompense.

  13. The whole world, all of it, is not worth

    one draught of water from Ahmad's pool.
