1. The house of the Message and Prophethood, and those

    we count as intercessors for our sins;

  2. The pure, the truthful, the learned,

    the masters, the noble ones.

  3. I have clung to love for them, holding fast,

    hoping thereby for God's approval.

  4. Do I seek anyone but them as a model for myself?

    No, by Him who fashioned the sky as sky!

  5. Who was the first to destroy with his sword

    the unbelievers at Badr, and deem their blood lawful to shed?

  6. Whose name did Gabriel proclaim

    on the day of Badr, as they heard the cry:

  7. "No sword but Dhu al-Fiqar, and no hero

    but Ali"—in exaltation and glory?

  8. About whom did the All-Merciful reveal "Has there come...",

    when they rose to the challenge of fulfilling their vows—

  9. those five, with Gabriel their sixth, while

    the Prophet spread a cloak over them all?

  10. Who gave his ring in charity while bowing,

    so the Lord of the Throne rewarded him for it with allegiance?

  11. O banner, before which Gabriel marched

    forward, and which the Prophet followed with prayer!

  12. God and His Messenger favored him with it,

    and God multiplied the splendors about him.

  13. Who busied himself with the Prophet and washing him,

    and found in that consolation apart from the world?

  14. Who was their most learned and their finest judge, and who

    made subjects and rulers equal?

  15. Who was the gate of the city of knowledge, who

    recounted revelation's descent and explained the tidings?

  16. Who was their finest orator and most eloquent speaker, and whose

    words would heal grievous anguish?

  17. Who was furthest removed from idolatry among them, or

    had a belly that was, for knowledge, [unclear wording]?

  18. Who was it whom they were commanded, when they differed, to

    accept as judge in their affairs?

  19. Whom did the Prophet send with a surah

    at the pilgrimage, one that was a decisive ruling and judgment?

  20. Who was it whom Muhammad instructed

    to fulfill his promises, and who carried out the instructions?

  21. For whom did the Prophet tenderly carry

    his two sons, until he had passed al-Ghamda [unclear term]?

  22. Who said, "What excellent riders these two are"? Nor

    was what he had done concealed.

  23. Who walked in the flash of brilliant lightning,

    when he left the Prophet's presence at nightfall?
