Kharijites parted from him at Nahrawan,
The dissenters parted with him at Nahrawan
Over his fine and admirable arbitration.
Over his good, beautiful arbitration
Over his appointing as arbiter—they went blind and deaf—
Over his arbitration they became blind and marked
The Book of God, in Gabriel's mouth.
The book of God in Gabriel's mouth
So they turned aside and rebelled against him,
So they inclined away and rebelled against him
Yet there they did not turn toward any refuge.
Yet they did not incline there to a purpose
So the people apparently wandered, bewildered in darkness,
The people's young women wandered in darkness
Blind, wandering in confusion without a guide.
Blind, without a guide
So they apparently strayed like grazing livestock on a feast day,
They preferred like cattle on feast day
Slaughtered in the morning and late afternoon.
Slaughtered at dawn and at night
As though we resemble the birds around them [wording uncertain],
As if the birds contending around them
Devoutly gathered around the monk's crosses.
Circling like bats around withered palms
