الفجرُ فجرُ الصبح والعشرُ عش
رُ الفجرِ والشَّفْعُ النَّجيبانِ
The dawn is the dawn of morning, and the ten are ten
The dawn, dawn of morn and the tenth, tenth of dawn,
of dawn; and the even pair are the two noble ones:
Mohammed and son of Abu Talib,
محمد وابن أبي طالبٍ
والوَتر ربُّ العزّةِ الثاني
Muhammad and the son of Abu Talib.
And the odd, Lord of Might a second,
And the odd is the Lord of Might, the second.
A fighter interpreted this thus,
مقاتِلٌ فسَّرَ هذا كذا
تفسيرَ ذي صِدقٍ وإيمانِ
Muqatil interpreted this thus,
An interpretation of truth and faith,
with the interpretation of one possessed of truthfulness and faith—
I mean Ibn Abbas who was a man,
أعني ابن عبّاسٍ وكان امرأ
صاحبَ تفسيرٍ وتِبيانِ
I mean Ibn Abbas, and he was a man
Of commentary and elucidation.
