1. For Ali, the sun was once brought back,

in Tayba, on the day of revelation, after sunset.

  2. And it was brought back for him again in Babylon, after

it had faded and its orb had descended toward sunset.

  3. And he was told, “Warn your nearest kin.”

And they were forty, young men and gray-haired elders.

  4. So he said to them, “I am a messenger to you,

and I do not see myself as a liar in your eyes.

  5. And I have indeed come to you from an all-watchful Lord,

lavish in gifts, a generous giver of great bounty.

  6. Which of you, then, will follow my words?” But they kept silent.

Then he said, “Is there no one to speak and answer me?”

  7. So Ali, from among them, won it and became their chief.

And that was nothing unusual in his customary ways.
