وحق تبسم يوم التلاقي

لتشتيت شمل ليالي الفراق

The right to smile on the day we meet

To bring together nights of separation

على ألفةٍ حسنت واتفاق

And connect the ropes of love between us

With congeniality and agreement

وحرمة موقفنا نجتلي

بدوراً منزهة عن محاق

And the sanctity of our encounter we celebrate

In rounds free of folly

ونسحب من صوننا والعفا

ف أردية بين تلك الحداق

We withdraw from our chastity

Into gowns between those cheeks

لقد ضقت ذرعاً بلوم العذول

فيا ليتهم نفسوا من خناقي

I'm tired of blamers reproaching me

If only they were rid of my noose

أحن لتجد متى أنجدوا

على أن داري قصور العراق

I yearn for you to find when they find me

That my home is Iraq’s palaces

فمن مخبر عني الظاعني

ن بالأمس إني على العهد باق

So who informs those accusing me

That yesterday I’m still true to my vow

وإني إذا استبق العاشقون

إلى غاية فزت يوم السباق

If lovers race ahead
