وشادن من بني الرهبان تاركني

حبي وقد شاع بين الناسِ واشتهرا

The monks reproach me for the love

That has spread among people and become renowned,

وقال لو كنت صباً لافتديت بمن

تهواه في لبسه الزنار والشعرا

And said, "If you were young, you would ransom

The one your heart desires, with his robe and hair."

فقلت لست بذنبي طالبا بدلا

ولو أذاب غرامي أعظمي وبرى

So I said, "I do not seek compensation for my guilt,

Even if my passion melts my bones and flesh away."

وكان ذلك منه أصل سلوته

والعزم في الأمر مما يعقب الضفرا

That was his way of consoling me at first,

But determination in this matter follows barrier.
