How many a beauty have I courted, and then parted from,
Grey-haired, though the ink of youth still stains my fingers.
A gazelle-eyed darling from the sands of Sirah,
Whose soft voice soothed my soul when she responded
To my call. We met in modest seclusion,
With propriety our chaperone and veil.
I complain of my weakness; virtue stands guard
Between us, so I submit to it obediently.
When dawn raised its brows
And the leaves stirred above our dalliance,
She rose to leave me, and bade farewell to our trysting-place,
Though in my heart still burns love's ember.
Oh what a brief night it was! Oh how
I yearn for her on a night that might be longer!
