She appeared to me at dusk, conversing
Of the hyacinth’s branch—a blessing and slender.
She walked among maidens like shy mountain does,
Not concealing her words among them.
I almost removed my collar, but
I was too shy, since it would be illicit.
Then I called her, with a heart
Aflame with love, surging with turmoil:
“O daughter of the tribe, do you have for a thirsty man
A drink from your cheek to cure his lovesickness?”
She replied, “Chastity and religion
Prevent that, as does propriety and Islam.”
