O you in whom chastity and piety abide,
whose twin qualities are loftiness and exalted rank:
your goblet—its very joints have been pulled apart
among the boon companions, never to come together.
It is as though the sun had fallen among them,
its body, in their palms, broken into pieces.
Had I not been sure that its like would come
from you, my heart would almost split apart.
So grant it freely—your matchless creation—for I have,
from your bounty, things that are marvels all.
