1. نوب الزمان قلائد الأعناق

    تزداد إن عوتبن ضيق خناق

    The turns of time are necklaces

    That tighten if reproached

  2. بخلت بما أبقته من أرماقنا

    فاستأثرت بيقية الأرماق

    It was stingy with what remains of our assets

    So it took over the rest of the assets

  3. نبيني الحصون منوطة أطرافها

    بالنجم وهي على الحصون رواقي

    Show me the fortresses with their edges

    Tied to the stars while they are porticos over the fortresses

  4. ونسالم الأيام وهي تدوسنا

    بوقائع محمرة الآفاق

    And we greet the days as they trample us

    With events that redden the horizons

  5. حتام نحمل غير محمول على

    إرهاقنا ونطيق غير مطاق

    We surely carry what cannot be carried

    Burdening ourselves and panting endlessly

  6. بل كيف ننهض بالخطوب وإننا

    لأرق من قمص تشف رقاق

    But how can we rise up with calamities while we

    Are more awake than a thin shirt with holes

  7. نجري وما نجري على مرر القوى

    لكننا نجري على الأعراق

    We race but do not race with strong horses

    Rather we race on our legs

  8. فننال نزر العيش بين فلائق

    غبر وبين جماجم أفلاق

    So we get a trifle of livelihood between noble

    Dust and skulls of twisted mouths

  9. وأرى الزمان يسوسنا بطرائق

    مطروقة وخلائق أخلاق

    And I see time ruling us with ways

    That are beaten and morals that are distorted

  10. لو أنصف الآداب عوض أهلها

    أطواق حليتها من الأوهاق

    If literature were to compensate its people

    With halters made of plaits

  11. هذا الغدير طما فأين الساقي

    والمعقل استعلى فأين الراقي

    This reservoir has overflown so where is the cupbearer?

    And the refuge arose so where is the observer?

  12. آثار غائبة الشخوص شواهد

    مجدا وماضية الحلوم بواقي

    Traces of the missing, proofs

    Of glory and past beauty are guards

  13. ومنازل عبق المكارم مخبر

    زوارها عنهم بقرب فراق

    And houses filled with generosity whose

    Visitors inform about them when departing

  14. يستعبر الطراق في عرصاتها

    للخطب بعد تبسم الطراق

    Dawn breaks through its yards

    For hardships after the dawn has smiled

  15. أهلال غاب بك الهلال وعوضت

    آفاقه ظلما من الإشراق

    O crescent, the crescent missed you and instead

    Darkness replaced its illumination

  16. هصرت بك الأيام دوحة سودد

    مكتنة الأثمار في الأوراق

    The days have pictured you as a blackened

    Leafy tree with ripened fruits

  17. حسناء طيبة المغارس تجتني

    منها العفاة محاسن الأرزاق

    O beautiful, good-planted, whose plants

    Give forth fine livelihoods

  18. اليوم يرعى الجود منك شقيقه

    إذ بنتما لا عن قلى وشقاق

    Today generosity from you feeds its brother

    Since you two are not hostile or quarrelsome

  19. وتؤوب خافقة القلوب عصابة

    محتومة الآمال بالإخفاق

    And the throbbing hearts are a group

    Whose hopes are destined to fail

  20. وتجف أثواب الثناء لأنها

    فجعت بريق مزنها الرقراق

    And the clothes of praise dry because they

    Grieved at the loss of their embroiderer

  21. لله أنت مفارقا لا تنطفي

    حرق العلا عنه بيوم تلاقي

    By God, you are gone but the burning passion

    Is not extinguished even when you meet

  22. تسعى المكارم حوله وكأنها

    غرر السوابق لحن يوم سباق

    Generosity revolves around him as if

    It were the finalists on race day

  23. لو أنها علقت بميت قبله

    فلعلقن منه بأنفس الأعلاق

    If tied to a dead person before him

    It would have held on with the strongest grip

  24. أضريحه حييت من ديم الحيا

    بمؤرق الأجفان ليس براقي

    His tomb gives life with the water of life

    To awake the slumbering, it is not illusive

  25. واه إذا حل النطاق على الثرى

    وافاك ناطقه بغير نطاق

    Alas if the shroud covered the soil

    And its speaker reached you without speaking

  26. قد كنت أمتهن الحوادث عنده

    متوطئا منها على الأعناق

    I used to manipulate tribulations through him

    Stepping over them with my feet

  27. فاليوم أدفع ظلمها بأنامل

    تربد من حزن ومن إشفاق

    But today I block their injustice with fingers

    Numbed from sadness and compassion

  28. مرضت ولو لبست تراب ضريحه

    لأخذن منه بعروة الإفلاق

    I fell sick and if I wore the soil of his tomb

    I would gain from him a strong cure

  29. لله أسرته الكرام فإنهم

    خلف النجوم الزهر في الأغساق

    God help his noble family for they

    Are stars veiled behind the horizon

  30. بسطوا وجوههم الحسان تجلدا

    وطووا جوانحهم على الإشراق

    They stretched their beautiful faces as shields

    And folded their wings over the emergence of light

  31. لو كنت خدن نديهم لرأيتهم

    مثل الأهلة لم ترع بمحاق

    If I were their close friend I would see them

    As crescents that did not graze at the horizon

  32. ورأيت إبراهيم مثل سميه

    صبرا غداة غدا إلى الإحراق

    And I would see Ibrahim like his namesake

    In patience the next day until burning

  33. أمم السجية لا الجفون غريقة

    وجدا ولا الأشجان في إغراق

    Nations of composure, not weeping eyes

    Drowning in sorrow without bursting into tears

  34. لا يعمل النظر الحديد ولا يرى

    فيما عناه تكلف الإطراق

    The iron gaze does not work and does not see

    What it cares for though intruding intently

  35. سحقا لقارعة الخطوب فقد نضا

    سيف النضال لها أبو إسحق

    Woe to the calamitous misfortunes, for the

    Sword of struggle of Abu Is’haq destroyed them

  36. ملك سماء يمينه وشماله

    منهلة بالسم والدرياق

    He ruled the heavens on his right and left

    With poisonous and piercing weapons

  37. بفوائد تجلي الولي جليلة

    ومكائد تردي العدو دقاق

    With profound manifestations of the Guardian’s aid

    And the enemy’s cunning failed ploys

  38. جار إلى العلياء أبصر فضله

    عنق الطريق فجد في الإعناق

    A noble newcomer saw his superiority

    Beyond the path so he raced to cling to it

  39. أنف الفصاحة لو تجسم لفظه

    أضحى عقود ترائب وتراقي

    The breath of eloquence, if embodied

    His words would become necklaces and finery

  40. ومفاضل الأعداء يغرس نبله

    بحدائق الوجنات والأحداق

    And his arrows that he launches at enemies

    Are gardens, cheeks, and rosy lips

  41. أفواقه مثل النصال إذا رمى

    ونصالهم في الرمي كالأفواف

    His horizons are like swords when he throws

    While their swords in throwing are like horizons

  42. أحللتني شماء لم تعرف لها

    إلا الكواكب أو علاك مراقي

    A blonde beauty you did not know

    Except for the planets or your high minarets

  43. خضراء ينسح الحيا من مزنه

    قبل انسكاب سحابه الغيداق

    Green, more supple than snakes

    Before its clouds pour heavily

  44. يثني بها الركب الركاب خفائفا

    وتثار وهي ثقائل الأوساق

    With it the traveling people lightly lead their mounts

    And it sways while being heavy with branches

  45. عطن يساق الحلي فيه إلى الذرا

    فكأنه سوق من الأسواق

    A perfumer whose perfumes are carried to thresholds

    As if it were one of the markets

  46. وملكت عبدا لم ترم خطراته

    عتقا ولم تعرف سبيل إباق

    And you owned a slave whose adventures

    You did not aim to free or seek to lose

  47. ومضىء مصباح الوداد إذا دجا

    في مضرمات الود ليل نفاق

    And the lamp of affection remains lit if

    The night of hypocrisy grows dark

  48. لا مظهر الشكوى ولا متملق

    إخوانه المثرين في الإملاق

    No pretentiousness or sycophancy with

    Brothers who arouse discord

  49. فتملها غراء تسفه حاسدي

    إن هم في ميدانها بلحاق

    So their glue is nonsense if they

    Catch up with it on its race track

  50. حليت مشرق حليها بك بعدما

    أطبقت أزمانا عليه حقاقي

    You have worn its shining jewelry after

    Eras had concealed it in darkness

  51. فاسلم فلو نال النجوم بليله

    أحد لنلت النجم باستحقاق

    So submit, for if the stars gained a night

    You would gain the star rightfully
