رَأَيتُكَ تَبْري للصَّديقِ نَوافِذاً

عَدُوُّكَ من أوصابِها الدهرَ آمنُ

I saw you being frank with a friend, revealing

Your enemy feels safe from the blows of time,

وتَكْشِفُ أسرارَ الأخِلاَّءِ مازِحاً

ويا رُبَّ مَزْحٍ عادَ وهو ضَغائِنُ

And jokingly disclosing friends' secrets,

Many a joke has led to hidden grudges.

سأخفَظُ ما بيني وبينَك صائناً

عهودَكَ إنَّ الحُرَّ للعَهْدِ صائِنُ

I will keep what's between us safe and secure,

Keeping one's word is what free souls endure,

وألقاكَ بالبِشْرِ الجميلِ مُداهِناً

فَلي منكَ خُلٌّ ما عَلِمْتُ مُداهِنُ

I will meet you with a cheerful, smiling face,

But want no shallow friend who flatters and feigns.

أَنَمُّ بما اسْتَوْدَعْتُهُ من زُجاجَةٍ

تَرَى الشئَ فيها ظاهِراً وهو باطنُ

I will guard what you entrusted carefully,

What's seen is clear, what's hidden remains unseen.
