أعاذِلُ إنَّ النَّائباتِ بمَرصَدِ

وإنَّ سرورَ المرءِ غيرُ مُخَلَّدِ

I take refuge, for the deputies are with observation

And indeed, one's joy is not immortal

إذا مضى يومٌ من العيشِ صَالحٌ

فَصِلْهُ بيومٍ صالحِ العيشِ مُرغِدِ

If a day of good living passes

Connect it with a day of comfortable good living

وحاليةٍ من حُسنِها وجَمالِها

وإن برزَتْ عُطلَ الشَّوى والمُقَلَّدِ

And a goblet of its beauty and grace

Even if the cessation of passion and trinkets appears

تُعاطيكَ كأساً غيرَ ملأى كأنَّما

فواقِعُها أحداقُ دِرْعٍ مُزَرَّدِ

It gives you an unfinished cup as if

Its occurrences are the pupils of a polished coat of mail

كأنَّ أعاليها بَياضُ سَوالفٍ

تَلوحُ على تَوريدِ جَيْبٍ مُوَرَّدِ

As if its heights are conversations’ whiteness

Waving on the reddening of a red pocket
