    upon every heart—though not upon every shoulder.

  2. And one lies in wait for me, morning and evening,

    around clauses as massive as towering mountains;

  4. its inner face, like a mantle, finely figured by its embroidery,

    its outer face like mirage amid the barren wastes.

  5. Many a young man meets swords face-first,

    yet falters at meeting the swords of binding deeds.

  6. I softened my words to them; but had I been safe

    from the testimony of mute witnesses that speak aloud of rights,

  7. the people's claims would have met a perjurer's oath,

    as a wooded thicket meets one of the thunderbolts.
