1. How little Abd Allah matters to me if he grows angry!

    For he shall have no amends from me when he takes offense.

  2. I clothed him in gilded, patterned robes of praise.

    And I said, 'Through him my palm has been filled with gold.'

  3. And I had struck with a keen-edged sword, but it glanced off.

    And I had struck sparks with a blazing fire-stick, but it went out.

  4. At last, when permission drew me close to his private conversation,

    And the chamberlain lifted the curtains and veils,

  5. I stood before a man drunk on folly,

    Pouring falsehood and lies into his ears.

  6. When he understood the praise, he took no delight in its beauty;

    Yet if people slapped one another in his presence, he was delighted.
