1. She sent, though her dwelling was far away and

    her long estrangement had driven patience away,

  2. a bitter orange, for which was borrowed from her

    the lovely radiance in which it was clothed.

  3. So its radiance comes from the fire of her cheek,

    and its wafting scent from the perfume of her breath.

  4. And what its interior conceals seems like

    the wicked treachery she kept hidden.

  5. And the green tinge mingling with its red recalled

    hands pinching the skin of her cheek.

  6. And it came to you, its beauties perfected,

    strutting in the robes of its finery.

  7. For its undergarment is yellow-hued silver, and of

    wrought gold is its everyday robe.

  8. It sends to souls, from afar,

    gifts of joy with its sweetly wafting fragrance.

  9. And the wafting of its scents protects it

    from your touching it when you sniff it.

  10. So drink beside it of its sister,

    alike in the qualities of fragrance and form.

  11. And turn your soul's rein away from thoughts

    whose company has left it tormented.
