1. Your swords, praise be to God, bring benefit,

when other people's swords bring harm.

  2. Why, then, are they short, while your hands are long,

given power over the necks of all people?

  3. And why do your fledglings turn white in hue,

yet, if they flutter, beak-feeding fills them red?

  4. And the one you wound has no claim for vengeance against you,

though every wound is reckoned a wrong to be avenged.

  5. And many a heinous offense has brought

to its perpetrator praise and renown.

  6. I see your deeds as deeds of honor,

so why are you more deserving of utter abasement?
