Prince of bounty, praise is immortality,
and far-ranging odes are soldiers.
When their hosts scatter from around kings,
around you there remains of them an armed and numerous force.
When they fight in your defense, they are keen swords;
and when they gleam upon you, they are necklaces.
From the bounty of your two hands I have a token whose
features have dwindled until they are nearly gone.
It has grown worn, while praise for it is renewed,
and diminished, while gratitude for it increases.
So if my token of your largesse is effaced,
then your image, through my praise, is fresh and new.
