1. Dawn lifted its veil and shone.

    And assailed the pitch-dark night and grew radiant.

  2. It rose, and with dawn a mantled figure was roused,

    Clad in brocade, crowned and collared with agate;

  3. Letting the crown's trailing ends hang upon his breast,

    And tucking up the finely patterned brocade upon him.

  4. So drink to the sweetness and beauty of the time

    A cup that heightens your heartache and yearning.

  5. Through it, joy becomes an unfettered sovereign,

    And care, in its hand, is a captive bound fast.

  6. It offered you musk from its breaths,

    Along paths that delight the eye with pristine beauty.

  7. And gardens whose varied beauties have raised

    An encircling wall of delight around you.

  8. And wine so fine that I thought its bubbles

    Were tears shimmering upon the roses of cheeks.

  9. And one whose eyelids cast tender glances—when he gazed,

    He would not let love's anguish in the heart grow gentle.

  10. And a radiant one, whom his drinking companion reveres for his majesty,

    So that he lowers his eyelids before him and bows his head.

  11. A king—when the beauties of his face appear

    In the west, we would think the west an east because of him.

  12. O Ali, you preferred high honors, so they gathered around you;

    And held your wealth cheap through generosity, so it scattered.

  13. So stain your right hand with wine, for often

    Its fingertips have stained the blue spearhead.

  14. And entrust your cares to the envious man; it is enough for him

    To pass the entire night sleepless.

  15. A young man's excellence incites the envious man to revile him;

    For agarwood would not be burned were it not for its fragrance.
