Shall I despair of an aspiration that aimed high,
Or lose hope in a resolve that dispelled darkness?
I held back from Iraq with unyielding defiance,
And endured the rain as it poured on Damascus.
So I came to know the prince, intimate with glory,
Fixed on noble deeds, lofty of endeavor.
I took up the sword, sharp and trenchant,
And did not take up the blunt and pointless blade.
They blame me for hoarding wealth,
And are prodigal with gifts until blamed.
The sword of resolve needs no speech for praise;
We are content with it and nothing else.
No enemy can approach it, seeking escape,
Even were he to cling to a star for refuge.
Safe are you - so how many meadows of praise
Have you watered with showers of gifts and spears?
And how many generous hands journey
To our lands, year after year?
Clouds from Damascus now loom
Over the land of citadels, gathering.
Sleepless eyes keep shedding tears
As their young heroes slumber.
They battle the foe with war
While dawn makes peace with darkness.
I stayed - but what visitor could leave you
Who saw the sea and the magnificent king?
Without you, I would not spur my steed
Or travel the miles, month after month.
My fondest hopes are when I draw
Rain from your hand like clouds.
My happiest nights are when your arrival
Returns to me, lasting and renewed.
If I weave rhyming verses for you
You have clothed me in rich garments.
