The burden of worries between a cup and a goblet,

And the delight of the lover and the beloved,

It clears my days with pleasure,

Unlike the fearsome day of horrors.

    Arrows that surpass sights,

That cannot be warded off except by hearts,

Among horses of wine brought close to me,

    Bringing joy through nearing.

And cups lined up in rows, as if

The legs of battles stood the morning of meeting.

And carpets as if they were lush meadows

Grazed by pouring rain from bursting clouds.

So the cups seem to have in them inclinations,

Like stars of night tilting toward setting.

We are sons of this cup, we do not

Turn aside from drinking it to any other drink.

Days educated us when they showed us

The tyranny of events against every cultivated person.

And we learned that we are allotted by death,

So we took from love our share.
